Thanks to everyone who commented last week.
Only three people, miki, Alyn and Faith Hope CherryTea (FHCT), remember dreaming of books. Miki dreams as secondary characters, Alyn cannot remember which and FHCT dreams from the Bible. Some of us would like to dream about books we read and some figure they wouldn't remember once they woke up anyway. :-) I agree with Ricki that sometimes I dream (or daydream) of scenes that could be in a book.

Q1. Lisa C asks: Would you DNF a book for historical inaccuracies or gaps in worldbuilding, or might the characters and plot keep you reading??
A: I cannot think of a book I DNF due to errors. I know I have recognized historical inaccuracies but I can't think of too many gaps in worldbuilding. So I would keep reading those. It does put me off the book though when there are obvious character errors. That stopped me from reading a particular author even though I realize it is the fault of bad proofing. Still, I think the author should catch that on a galley proof.Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We still have a supply of questions but from the same people so hopefully others will send more in -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify to use.

I have never put a book in the DNF pile for errors. Normally a book ends there for me if I can't get into the story. I it doesn't capture and hold my interest withing the first 3 or 4 chapters, I put it down and don't finish reading it.
ReplyDeleteToo many gaps in world building within the first 3 chapters is a red flag for me because it's a sign that the author didn't think it over properly and most probably there will be other problems with the book.
ReplyDeleteMy historical acumen isn't that good that I'd recognize an error if it hit me on the head. If I DNF a book it's usually because the style of writing and plot is poor.

If a book doesn't grab me in the first 6 chapters it ends up going to the used book store.
I will eventually finish every book I start, but slow moving ones do get put in a pile where I just pick them up randomly to read a chapter or two.
ReplyDeletei have the tendency to finish what i start even if it's difficult as a result so far i never DNF a book oh it did put me in a reading slump or i spend weeks on some because i didn't like them but i've read to the last page
ReplyDeletenow for the same reasons historical inaccuracies would probably bother me but not to the point of stopping reading. i would not read another book of the author later that yes it could happen but once started a book must be finished
Even with errors I will keep reading if I'm enjoying the story.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the flavor of the historical period is correct I'm OK. It's really the characters and story line that keep me interested.

Unless the errors are very bad, I finish the book. I rarely put down a book I start.

I tend to overlook errors in books, as long as they aren't completely distracting. I tend to DNF books if I can't connect to the characters or plot.
ReplyDeleteI keep reading it even with the errors. If it is really bad then I mention it in a book review. Otherwise I just ignore it because I'm not perfect either.
ReplyDeleteI do expect a work of fiction to be a touch liberal with history & historical facts. These I can quite easily forgive & overlook. I do however need the story to be engaging & hold my undivided attention.

ReplyDeleteI'm not proficient in the historical periods I read about so nope. Wouldn't DNF it. If the story is good, I'll keep on reading. It's fiction after all!
ReplyDeletewith the size of my tbr stacks and audio books, I can't afford the time with a questionably or frustratingly edited book - there are soooo many great ones I love to spend time with and dearly love a great reading experience over a struggle =)
