Oh - crazy week trying to get caught up again! Then today I lost half the day on phone with webtech setting up a new computer.
Six of you are like me not re-reading many books. Others named some really good classics like Pride and Prejudice, or children's books (Emily mentioned The Giving Tree) and some named books I have never heard of so I might check them. :-)
Nine of us have attended rodeos although many attended a long time ago. Thirteen of you have never attended a rodeo.

Q1. Birgit asks: How long do you keep on reading a book before you decide that it's too boring/awful/etc. and put it away, filing it under DNF??
A: I rarely give up on a book. Even if it is boring I usually push through. But if the foul language or the sex is too much for my comfort I will stop within 50 pages or so.

Q2. My non-bookish Question: Have you ever participated in a Rally or demonstration??
A: I did attend a peace rally 'back in the day' when I was in college (1970s.) I also participated in a couple of pro-life rallies when I was younger.

Q1: I normally always finish a book that I started even if I can't get into it. I have only stop reading 2 different books that I can remember and that was after reading the first 3 chapters.

1) i can't let a book go without finioshing it now if it's really boring or i hate it i could take weeks before finishing it but i will finish wht i start ( and i can't read 2thing at a time so i need to fnish it before reading something else)

ReplyDeleteA: I've decided life is too short for reading bad books since long ago... So, I try at least 50 or 100 pages, depending on the book, in order to decided if I will DNF it or not... but there are books that are so boring that I do not even try that much! And then I give them to a friend who might enjoy 'em, because it's not that I don't like the book that everybody will... but if I find the book too horrid, I will not even gift it, because nobody deserves that, and the only instance of that is American Psycho, a boo I wish I could unread (and one of the reasons why I now DNF books and not read them if I find them boring or horrid.

1. If rarely give up if it boring,more likely I give up if the sex is too graphic for me or the bad language has no reason to be there. I once gave up on a book that I had only read 25 pages. The author was introducing three to five characters each page. I was so confused I knew I could never get through a book.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, I did. In college, I marched with my friends to the state capital because of a tuition increase. I had savings that I had saved while working but many of my friends were barely making it and would definitely have to drop out college. (I got screamed at!)

I try to get through when I find myself getting bored or just can't get into it. Maybe by 50 pages does it.

It depends on the book, but usually around the 25-33% marked. I have stopped 75% of the way through a book before though.

I have been part of a demonstration at school when a young girl was hit by a car crossing the street in front. We demanded a stoplight for kids crossing be put in, and it was granted.

1. Depends how bad it is. They've been books where I couldn't stomach more than a few pages & others where I struggled thru several chapters before I gave up.

Q1. I usually try to give it a few chapters. Normally, if a book either isn't grabbing my attention or is grabbing it in a wrong way, I end up not finishing it. I feel badly, and sometimes I do try to give it a second chance later on. Sometimes it just may be that I am not feeling interested in that genre that day or I may be in a reading slump.

Q1. I can usually tell by the end of the first page if a book is for me or not, but I will stick with it for up to 20-50 pages - sometimes.

I finish nearly everything I start. Sometimes I push on because a friend has told me it has a payoff; sometimes I finish it because it is a classic & I want to know what all the fuss is about.

Q1. I give up books that don't interest me. I blame my ADHD. If a book can't keep me interested enough to finish it, or to at least come back to it later, then it's not above a 3 star rating. For me, if a book can keep me reading till the end, that's a really good book.

1. I rarely DNF a book. I usually try reading some till it loses my attention, then try again later. If, after 2 tries, it still cannot keep my attention, it usually gets DNF'd.

1. I rarely give up on a book...it has to be truly beyond awful and completely predictable for me to give up on it. In the rare cases that has happened it is by the halfway mark. If I make it that far I make myself see it through to the end.

ReplyDeleteQ2. First, we don't have a lot of them. Second, they're all political ones and I don't like politics. Third, I HATE crowds. I try not to make myself suffer so nope, none of those for me.
