School is out so is anyone enjoying a vacation yet? My grandkids are still busy with baseball championships etc. I am still (always) avoiding the sun.

Only two of us (miki and Diamond) buy more than one version for covers although Gwen plans to. :-). However -- nrlymrtl will get the audio for her DH, which I completely understand and I do that too when I can get my DH to listen. Several mentioned that they wait for several releases then buy the 'prettiest' cover. I never even considered that. And another handful of us do like to collect the full series for authors/series we love.
The only 'unusual pet' mentioned more than once was a chinchilla. Chickens (not on farm) and other birds were mentioned, including Di's grackle. Nikki mentioned fish and I had to look up "climbing perch." Again I was a little surprised at the handful of people who had no pets.

A: Does reading the Dictionary and Encylopedia count? I did that back when I was about 13 and 14. Other than that I would say The Bible Cure Book or Collecting Antiques.
Q2. My non-bookish Question this week: Do you like puzzles and if so which is your favorite: jigsaw, Sudoku, crossword, word search, logic, maze, other??
A: I really enjoy all sorts of puzzles - except Sudoku which my DH likes. As a kid I loved the hidden object pictures in Highlights Magazine. Then I used to do word puzzles in Reader's Digest. My sister and I both liked getting puzzle magazines to work on and I used to save the logic ones so I could do them again years later. I also love jigsaw puzzles although those mostly got put away when children came along. Now I have children sized ones I encourage my grandkids to play with!

Q1: I had to think about this one. I do read a lot of nonfiction books, but had a hard time thinking about one that was the oddest. Will "The Mythical Creatures Bible: The Definitive Guide to Legendary Beings" be classified as an oddest nonfiction.
ReplyDeleteQ2: I love doing puzzles. Hard to say which is my favorite though. I love doing jigsaw puzzles and word search the most. But I also like to do Sudoku, logic, mazes and ones that you find the difference between two pictures. I try to do crossword puzzles but I'm not very good at those. Does computers games where you have to find the item count, since I like doing those which are similar to a hidden object picture game.
I enjoy sudoku as well as jigsaw puzzles.

If on paper, I prefer word search. If as a game, I prefer block-related ones like Tetris or jewel-related like Columns or Bejeweled Blitz.

ReplyDelete1. Seeing how I read tons of non-fiction books it's a bit embarrassing how I can't think of the weirdest one right away ... but wait, I just remembered one - "Eat Right 4 Your Type" by Peter D'Adamo which gives advice on eating according to your blood type.
ReplyDelete2. I am not that much into "normal" puzzles though I tackled some Kinkade puzzles a couple years back. What I do enjoy quite a bit are word finds!
Q1: I have read a book about how eye color and other genetic features are determined. Not sure if that's odd or not lol.
ReplyDeleteQ2. I love word searches and fill-in puzzle books. I like logic puzzles sometimes too, but other times they make my head hurt. :)
I have read all of Mary Roach's books, except the latest. She does investigative reporting and the books are informative and humorous. Spook is on man's continued love affair with the here after - ghosts and such. Bonk is a study on human's studies of human sexuality - you won't believe what she experiment she gets her husband to help with! Stiff is on what we do with the dead, like if you donate your body to science, etc. Packing for Mars was more of a history of our attempts to explore space - but all sorts of odd facts that you didn't know about.
ReplyDeleteI like puzzles that have a lot going on but aren't of boring country scenes or water wheels, etc. Give me pirates and dragons and 10,000 kinds of weird seashells.

1. I think the oddest non-fiction would be a book I read for research for a High School assignment. It was all about Lord Byron. It was fascinating, I must admit, but instead of praising him for his beautiful poetry it ripped him to shreds. His life-style was unconventional to say the least, but still. "She Walks In Beauty" is a favourite of mine.
ReplyDelete2. I LOVE puzzles. Online each morning, I do two crosswords, one cryptic, a word code and a word search. I think it actually wakes my brain up for the day. My daughter & Mother love sudoku. My daughter also loves jigsaw puzzles.
The only non fiction that I can think of are Bible stories and the Bible.
