Sharing Beyond Books #95 Comment Giveaway April 13, 2013

Hello, Welcome to SBB.

Happy Saturday night! It has finally warmed up here which is good but the mosquitoes are AWFUL. We had birthday cake for our grandson's 9th BD tonight. (Now I really need to exercise.)

Thank you to all who shared last week.

Most of us do not exercise -- except for our brains as Nikki noted. The big problem is motivation as Sarah said. I wish I could get my DH to walk with me as we both need it. It sounds like Ricki has a great program - I never heard of Zumba until a year or so ago when our new daughter-in-law was so active before getting pregnant.

The number of those who look at, and a few who post, cover reveals are greater in number than the 7 of us who do not look at them. It sounds like several of you do post them and many like to look at them. I do agree with CarolNW and nrlymrtl that sometimes those posts comparing the US to UK covers are interesting.

WEEK #95 Questions

Q1. This questions sort of fits to follow last week.
        MaryP asks: Can you swim??
A: We had a pool on our farm and I learned to swim at an early age. We moved to Florida when I was about 12. I swam competitively in high school with my events being backstroke, relays and distance freestyle. I love stretching out on the backstroke take off and I did manage back flip turns. I still enjoy alternating strokes when I swim.

Q2. My bookish Question this week: Do you avoid or like reading LONG books??
A: (I thought this might have been asked but I checked my spreadsheet which covers from week #3 and it is not there so it's a fair question.)
I am guilty of not reading too many books over 400 pages. However - If I really want to read a long book - like the Harry Potter series - I will listen to it in Audio format. (I still have the first 5 Potter books on cassette.) Even then I am reluctant to pick up something like The Pillars of the Earth which is 40 hours on Audible. Books that I have on my shelf that I probably won't read but might listen to include: The Passage (36 hours), The Fallen 1 and Storm Glass.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We can always use fresh questions.

  1. I can swim but I don't like to when others are around.

I like reading long books so long as they are good. If not, I don't finish them when I might have finished a shorter book.

  2. 1. Yes, I can swim though I learned it rather late compared to other kids (I was about ten years old). Not a big swimmer these days, so I'm usually proud of myself if I manage to swim a whole lap without my arms bursting into flames, hahaha!

    2. I love long books though they can be daunting too. BTW I am hosting the *Tea & Books Reading Challenge* on my blog where you need to read books with 650+ pages (and you may guzzle copious amounts of tea while turning the pages).

  3. 1. No.

    2. Not if they're good.

  4. 1. Yes, I love swimming. While growing up, I was on my school and various club swim teams. Now, I enjoy swimming at pools and the sea. :)

    2. I'll read long books, if I'm interested in the genre.

  5. i love swimming but i don't have a lot of opportunity to do so ... the swimming pool isn't far from home perhaps 15 min on foot but it cost nearly 10dollars ( since they did teh new one big buiduilding swimming pool-_- instead of 2 dollards when it was teh oldest one still functionnable)
i'm also more shy than before

    2) as long as it's a book i love the size doesn't matter at all now i do prefer to read author i already know i guess for long book but when taking a book it's really not a criteria for me

  6. I follow on gfc as Jennifer L.

I can swim and used to do it a lot when I was a kid.

I'm reading Anna Karenina right now so I clearly don't avoid long books. They're a little more intimidating though. I really hope I push through and finish this one.

  7. 1. No, I was in a large swimming class at the Y and I tried and tried. Got scared when we went to a the deep section of the pool and I was floundering for what seemed forever. I swallowed a lot of water and no one noticed that I was thrashing around. I gave up and stopped going.

    2. I have several books on my shelf that are over 400 or 500 pages and I hesitate to start them. Once in a while, I will.

  9. I can swim, and I love to!

Recently I have been avoiding it, and I have been more in the mood for novellas. If its a good book however, I will gladly try it. :)

  10. 1. We have an inground pool so we swim as much as possible - aside from swimming it's a great social activity with neighbors and my sons friends.

    2. I don't like reading long books - I love the short quick chapters of James Patterson, Stuart Woods and similar authors.

  11. I have always been a little afraid of water. I can swim well enough to keep from drowning but I'm never comfortable in water.

Sometimes I like to read a long book because I feel like in these books I am a part of the story. Then I feel let down when the story ends. I want it to go on and on!! When I know that I have a lot of commitments, I pick a short book so I can get something done besides have my nose in a book!

  12. I love to swim but I rarely get the chance. We live pretty far from the closest public pool (45 mins.) and an hour from a gym that has a pool open to monthly subscribers. We occasionally talk about putting one in, just a little one, for the two of us. That will be a big project.

I love me a good long read, but I want the book to be awesome. I want to finish those 500 or 1000 pages and put it down with a satisfied sigh, and say, Damn, that was great. So, that rules out many long Russian novels (yes, i have read several, and they were interesting from a historical point, but rather dull from an enjoyment aspect). I love Pillars of the Earth, Harry Potter, Brandon Sanderson, Neal Stephenson, Dorothy Dunnett, and many others.

  13. I can't swim but i want to learn.

I avoid long books when i have regular classes in collage but will love to read them if they are good during my summer breaks... :)

  14. I have a beautiful pool and I can swim but I really don't like to swim.

I don't really like to read really long books unless I have heard good things about them and can't pass them up.

  15. 1. yes
    2. prefer long books

  16. Nope. can not swim in spite of growing up in a town on a lake!

I don't mind a long book if I've enough time to invest time and focus on completing it. Otherwise it's not appealing to me :)
I do luv my reading time but unfortunately it's in pretty short supply at the moment :)

  17. Yeah, I can. My father took me to swimming classes when I was so young. Maybe 4 years old. I went with one of my brothers :)

Oh! I love long books. I've read Harry Potter's series like 15 times. Maybe more. Lol. But I love them as always they have something different that keeps you breathless. Because I've read some books that it feels so false some situations and I just kept wondering if they are doing the book to last longer just to make more money. :(

  18. Congrats to the winner.

I lived in Florida for quite a few years when I was a young girl and learned to swim then because we were living so close to the beach. I love swimming. I don't get to swim as much as I would like to though.

When I first stared reading the Outlander series it was years after it had come out so I read the first 5 books during a 2 month period and swore I was going blind. :) I believe they average 900 pages each or somewhere around that count. It's the only books I ever read with that many pages. And believe me every page was worth it.

Q2. My bookish Question this week: Do you avoid or like reading LONG books??

I don't particularly like reading really LONG books...I end up taking forever to start or even finish them because I feel like it's going to take way too long.

  26. Q1. Erm....I can swim to save my life but have never taken part in competitions or anything like that.

Q2. I don't dislike them, but if I am faced with the choice of a LONG one and a shorter book from my TBR, I pick the shorter one, even if the LONG one is more popular.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can swim. But I'll never win a race, I'm much too slow.

I have been reading more long books this year. I actually read the Passage this year, and pre-ordered the paperback copy of the 2nd book, and will read it as soon as it arrives later this month.

  28. I follow on GFC and by email.
    I love to swim!
If it is a good book that has action or situations that keep my interest, I don't mind a long story. But if it is like a couple of the classics that drag then yes I avoid them.

    2. I don't mind long books as long as the story is well written and it isn't a bunch of filler.
