Sharing Beyond Books #72 Comment Giveaway October 27, 2012

Welcome to another SBB!

Hello late on Saturday Night. I'm finishing this late tonight as we went to a Sunday School group bonfire. The location was on a lake and beautiful although the wind picked up for a chilly 57 degrees. We watched Thou Shalt Laugh 4 and there was some great humor!

Thank you to all who shared last week.

Several of your countries do not celebrate Halloween but I loved that most of you shared costume ideas or favorite costumes from childhood. I especially loved the book ideas: Carol NW suggested dressing as a library; Abby suggested dressing as a giant book; and Elizabeth mentioned school children having to dress as book characters. Several of you also mentioned dressing in older period costumes which would be fun too.

It sounds like we all have pretty big, and mostly out of control, TBR piles, boxes and shelves. I think the most organized sounded like Ricki with her sorted shelves, miki with her boxes by genres and mamabunny13 with her 10 books in a stack approach. I do have boxes by genres in addition to authors so maybe I can incorporate that for next year's approach to the TBR stacks. :-)  And Birgit, Carol and others - we will not even discuss the ebook (Knidles, Nook, etc.) TBR stacks!!

WEEK #72 Questions

Q1. Faith Hope & CherryTea asks: Many of the classics being formatted for ebooks are including the original illustrations. Are you more influenced to prefer or choose a book with illustrations??
I have been really lax at re-reading classics. I'm thinking I would rather listen to them then read. :-) But IF I were reading I think I would love to see original illustrations in the old classics.
While looking for an image I discovered a classic
that I loved as a child. Maybe you have one to share that you remember?

                   and

Q2. Since we are almost on Halloween I have one more question: IF you do / or were to celebrate what part of Halloween would you participate in?? Decorations? Would you let the kids go down the street door to door for trick or treating or take them to a festival event??
A: We avoid the night and turn out our porch light although we are on a secluded mile long drive so not likely to get visitors anyway. :-) I get a big bag of candy for our church which is sharing with other churches in a downtown "Trunk or Treat" event where they give the candy out of the backs of cars. My daughter will dress the grandkids and take them to that type of event but she may well walk them around her neighborhood too to get their "trick or treat" candy. They have a very safe neighborhood and she will decorate her house as will many others. Our town also has a haunted house every year.
Mystica asked last week to explain the candy "trick or treat" aspect. I found two articles to share for explanations:   Why candy is given out on Halloween? found at http://www.emasherbs.com  and http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_do_people_give_out_candy_on_Halloween
Spider Web and Pumpkin Trunk idea found at Squidoo How to Trunk Your Car

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far. Either way - it works for me. :-) The question list is being replenished!  Thanks for sending in questions!

***OCTOBER Questions were submitted by: Louisa, Mary P, Krystal, mamabunny13 and Faith Hope & CherryTea. This months Q winner is: Krystal. Please choose a book selection from the SBB winner choices.

  1. 1. Oh when to find the time to re-read the classics *sigh* though if I could choose I'd definitely go for the editions with original illustrations!

    2. Well, if I were living in the US I'd probably go all the way, including dressing up and having fun trick or treating! Of course I'd hand out healthy snacks and kids would hate me, hahaha!

  2. 1) when i read classic i prefer the original versions ( so there are illustrations in them oki but i don't want a recent edition just because illustrations are in it)

2 Like Birgit if i was in the Us i would probably do everything now since i' don't live there: a bit of decoration and dress up ( for helping in teh shop and a event in the roleplaying club) but i would not let the kids wander ( really not cautious here) so i would take them to a festival or in a ttraction park because for halloween there are special activities and decorations ( and candies so better that than the street)

  3. Congrats winners.

1.When it comes to the Classics, it has to be with the illustrations. It just rounds out the whole setting with that old fashioned flair.

    2. I used to go all out, decorating, baking and dressing up with the kiddies as we went trick or treating. Now, just some decorations and candy for the grandbabies. They all go to the Trunk and treat festivals now with their parents and walk one or two blocks through their own neighborhood.

    2. I think your "trunk or treat" is a fabulous idea! I would love to decorate my house and set up a spooky tour for the children.

  5. 1. The original illustrations are nice, but not necessary for me.

    2. I have participated in Halloween for years, but I do enjoy the candy. :)

  6. 1. I love illustrations in children's books. I still have the book that a librarian gave me when I was very young, Robert Louis Stevenson's Garden of Verses. I love that book.

    2. We used put out a plastic jack o lantern that had a light inside. Of course when my son was young, we bought a pumpkin and carved it

  7. 1. I do love books with illustrations, but I am not sure about ebooks with illustrations - what happens if you change the font size?
    2. We'll be passing out candy this Halloween...which I still have to go buy.

  8. If they were ebooks, I doubt I would care but in paper books, I would want to see the illustrations.

When my son was young, I took him out to trick or treat. We lived in a large condo area. He only went to those "houses" that had porch lights on. Once we got home, I handed out candy to the older kids that were still going around. Now, I hand out candy to the kids that come by in the neighborhood where I currently live.

  9. Q1 - Are you more influenced to prefer or choose a book with illustrations??

Q2 - what part of Halloween would you participate in?? Decorations? Would you let the kids go down the street door to door for trick or treating or take them to a festival event??

I'd take them out early & to apartment buildings/flats to provide some joy to elderly people who wait to see the children dressed up !

  10. 1. Some of the charm of the classic reads is the illustrations. If they were available I would want to include them.

    2. I'm with Birgit. In Australia we don't celebrate Halloween, but if I grew up with it I can see myself embracing it whole heartedly.

  11. I think I would enjoy seeing the illustrations of some of my favorite books from childhood. I love shopping for Halloween decorations. I don't know of any festival events here, but I would go if there were.

  12. 1. I don't care for illustrations in books except for the Classics.
    2. My kids used to dress up and go trick or treating when they were little - now that they're older we just hand out candy

  13. 1. I'm not really into reading classics, but even if I was, having illustrations doesn't really matter one way or the other.

    2. I am taking my dressed-up son trick-or-treating this year. We live in a great established family neighborhood, so it should be lots of fun.

  14. Sometimes the illustrations for the classics are so far from what I have pictured for years, that i actually prefer editions that lack illustrations. If it is a classic that is new to me, then illustrations are cool.

We live in a very rural year. In 10 years, we have gotten 1 family trick-or-treating. So, we probably won't be doing anything here.
