Sharing Beyond Books #71 Comment Giveaway October 20, 2012

Welcome to another SBB!

Hello again on Saturday Night. It's mid-October already! The year keeps flying by. How is everyone doing?

Thank you to all who shared last week.

It looks likes we get a wide variety of recommendations although several of you mentioned recommendations of paranormal authors. Mentioned more than once were: Nalini Singh, JR Ward, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It appears that several of us get recommendations from Goodreads but many get recommendations from bloggers! Isn't that nice that we share with each other. :-)

Looks like people use different media for different purposes: games, contests, family and friends, etc.. I think I have to agree that FaceBook is good for staying in touch or, like me, at least getting news about family and friends. Twitter may have more purpose to follow specific discussions -- nrlymrtl mentioned a movie group at http://booksnobbery.wordpress.com/ and Michelle mentioned TuesBook Talk. Many seem to use Goodreads for book media.  I learned two new places:  Elizabeth mentioned Foursquare and Texas Book Lover mentioned fictfact. I am with Anubha that I try to check my email each day for blogger posts too.

WEEK #71 Questions

Q1. mamabunny13 asks: If you were going to a halloween party what would you go as?? Ok - I think we have asked similar Qs at this time a year but it is sort of fun so I'm going to expand this. I know some of your countries don't celebrate halloween at all, so (A) please tell us if you don't celebrate, why (ie. country doesn't or personal choice) and (B) please play imagine and answer mamabunny13's Q even if it is hypothetical OR share a favorite costume you have seen. :-)
1(A): I don't really celebrate halloween because the churches I have been with don't celebrate this. We do however try to have a Fall Festival or Hallelujah party so the kids have an alternative place to go and still get candy.

1(B)I can't really (or maybe don't want to) imagine dressing up anymore. But one of my favorite costumes my mother made my sister and me (we are 16 months apart)as kids was as a pair of dice. Actually a fairly easy costume. My mom also made one brother an upside down man one year.
I found these images at Coolest Homemade Costumes

Q2. Here is a book question -- How do you handle your TBR shelves/piles??
A: My simple answer is: Not well! I have gone through the boxes of "won" books and put ten or so in one box but I have only gotten through two of the print books this year. The only way I have gotten to read some of my Kindle Library is to pick titles that work for the Just For Fun reading and I pick ones that I have had for more than a year so that I am pulling from the older TBR. (Sometimes I run giveaways to let commenters help me pick a title. I love to do that.) Other than that I really haven't gotten to much of my TBR and my favorite author collections have been left to gather dust. *sigh* I have managed to read at least one TBR book per month this year but I want to do better. I have a plan to implement for 2013. So we will see if that helps!
Oh just imagine! I found this image at The Book Garden Spot - Thank you Birgit!

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far. Either way - it works for me. :-) The question list is being replenished!  Thanks for sending in questions!

Your turn to share:

1. mamabunny13 asks: If you were going to a halloween party what would you go as?? I expanded to (A) please tell us if you don't celebrate, why (ie. country doesn't or personal choice) and (B) please play imagine and answer mamabunny13's Q even if it is hypothetical OR share a favorite costume you have seen. :-)

2. Here is a book question -- How do you handle your TBR shelves/piles??

  1. 1. We don't celebrate Halloween in Austria, though in recent years schools and Kindergardens started to indulge kids in the whole dressing up and carving pumpkins thing. All Saint's Day is being observed though and it's a day to remember those who've passed on with people visiting graveyards that day. Oh and it's also a public holiday here!

But IF I celebrated Halloween the US-way I might dress up as Broccoli, jut for the fun of it.

    2. Hahaha ... and I thought that tumbling TBR pile looked familiar! ;-) But seriously, my book piles are, quite frankly, out of control. I try to hide them in boxes, but you can only have so many boxes before it starts to look as if you were moving *sigh*. At least now I am sharing the love through pre-loved giveaways (thanks for inspiring this, Martha) though this is Europe only due to postage (on the upside I am always giving away whole boxes filled with books). I'm glad that no one can see how stuffed my eReaders are (yes, plural, I own a Kindle and one from Aluratek for my epubs). Can you say hoarder? I think they should make a TV show with book hoarders, now that'd be fun ... as long as I'm not being featured, ha!

  2. 1)No Halloween in this part of the world at all. Nothing in Sri Lanka even remotely like this. I still cant understand the trick or treat bit. someone out there explain.

    2) Ditto for costumes. Never worn a costume or fancy dress ever and a little too late to even imagine one. I like the creativity however that most parents somehow conjure up to create stuff for their children. Not just costumes but the food, the decor, the whole nine yards.

    3) TBR - mine is miles high and it all will get done eventually.

  3. 1. The last few years I have gone as a punk simply because I have this red and black wig. My favorite costume though was one year when we went to see my friend's production of Misery at midnight. He was running a costume contest for favorite Stephen King character. I couldn't think of what to be, so I just printed out a sheet of paper that said "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" over and over...and I was the one the audience picked.
    2. I have all of my TBR piles one shelves. I have my review shelf, shelf of books I won, shelf of books people told me to read, then the shelf of books I really want to read for fun.

  4. 1. I never did but I just thought of going as a library. It would be easy to make shelves of books.

    2. TBR is a problem. I joined the Just for Fun 2011 Challege, this is my third year. The requirement is to read and review one a month. But I pushed myself farther. I have a spreadsheet of all my print books with the date and I highlighted all the older books(no dates because putting the dates I started later. So each month, I read about 2 to 3 older ones.Currenly, I have about 400 books. I have put myself on a book buying ban until Christmas so that helps too. Making progress.

Now, my books on Kindle-what a mess-I have signed up to several free kindle book newsletters, there are now over 3,000 of them. It would be too exhausting to make a spreadsheet of them. I move about 75 at time from the PC Kindle to my regular one. I after two years, I am still working on that group. If I decide not to read a book after looking at it I do delete it. But this part of my TBR is hopeless!!

  5. 1) in Belgium halloween is celebrated but only since a few year and not in a big thing either, it's better in soem small village where all the village make a festival of some kind. In bigger city sometimes they have a moment for the kids to ask candy or a contest for the costumes etc.
I will dress up a bit to help my mother in her shop ( hp robe) and then my role playing club make a special Cthullu reiunion so i will dres in the style of 1920

2)For my TBR pile this year i participated in a challenge, each month i get to read a new subgenre of romance so to help me with that i put the books in several boxes ( one per subgenre so i don't have to look at each book just when i have to choose one to read)
For the other i just put a new shelves above my computer and i put there the one i win or have for review, once it's read it go back with the rest of the series in it's chosen place

    thank you a lot

  6. If Halloween is on a workday, we often don't get around to dressing up. If it's on the weekend and we get to go play with little kids, then we do something fun.

My TBR mountain live in the lower field.

  7. 1. a witch
    2. pick a book from the pile to read

  8. 1) I always wanted to dress up as Princess Jasmine, but those pants can be impractical. I haven't found a costume yet, if I have time (after all Halloween is in the middle of the week this year) I may choose to go out, so I will need to find something!

    2) My TBR list . . . well I can say that they make great decorations :). I have a bunch of bookshelves/other shelving that has been turned into books shelving. In terms of what to read next, it completely depends on the type of day I've had, how much free time I have, and if I need to finish up a series or not. I also have not yet committed to an ereader (although there is now a tablet on the market that I think is worth saving up for), so all my e-books have to be read on the computer. Which means that I can read a bit during lunch breaks, etc., but it also means that when I get home, if I don't feel like staring a a screen anymore a print book takes priority.

My other problem is that I am addicted to the library, I cannot walk in to return something without walking out with five more books! Those always have to take priority because they have return dates.

    These were fun questions :)

  9. There were a few superhero movies this summer that were popular, so I would probably choose to go as the Black Widow or Catwoman. I try to look through the pile and choose which ones appeal and read those first.

  10. 1. Even though we don't celebrate Halloween here in Australia I know I would dress up as a witch. Maybe for just one night I would then have magical powers. A touch of magic would be amazing I think.

    2. I read what ever catches my eye next, or the book my daughter vehemently recommends.

  11. 1. haven't dressed up in years, but I always wanted to go full out with a complete Victoria or Elizabethean dress costume. Just to see how hard women had it back then, and cause there was such over the top decadence with some of the dresses.

    2. I used to be very organized with a first in first out system, but now I read whatever catches my eye, unless the author was smart and crafty and got me to commit to a specific date.

  12. 1. I would dress up as a vampire.
    2. I usually make a TBR pile and try to read some of them.

  13. 1. Cyrus doesn't celebrate Halloween; however, Carnival is celebrated here (in a few months), in which people where Halloween-style costumes. In elementary school (in the States), our school required our Halloween costumes to be characters from books. :)

    2. I have a bookshelf with my print books to read, and I keep a list of to-read books on Goodreads.

  14. Congrats to the winner.
    1. I went one year as Charlie Chaplin. I had no costume that year and decided to go to a Halloween party at the last minute. Started rummaging through my brother's things and ended up as Charlie. I looked just like him. :) Won the prize too.

    2. My TBR pile is not being handles very well. I have a terrible habit of going to the library and seeing new books that I check out and get all caught up in them ignoring my TBR pile. I definitely have to learn to control myself when I stop in and I made a vow I'd only start reading from my TBR pile to get it moving

  15. 1. I would like to dress up as someone scary...King Henry VIII
    2. I make a stack of ten books, choose from that stack according to my mood then start another stack of ten.

  16. 1. When I was younger, I would always dress as a princess of some sort for Halloween. Now that I'm older, I don't really dress up anymore but if I were to, I still couldn't bring myself to dressing up as something scary. I guess I'm just one of those who like to dress up as something fun, but non-scary :)

    2. I don't, LOL! Books that make it into my TBR pile are usually reads that I did have an interest in and want to read sometime, however there are just too many books and I'm a moody reader so I usually just pick to read whatever I feel like reading at the time. The thing is though, this includes any new, have-to-read-now, releases and not just current TBR books, so it makes it hard to make a dent in the TBR pile. I guess what I have been trying to do is really limit what I put in the TBR pile so that it grows at a slower rate...

  17. If you were going to a halloween party what would you go as??
I'd luv to dress up in Regency style - like a Jane Austen character :)) luv the velvet pelisse and embroidered reticules but not the bonnets ! ;)

Q2- How do you handle your TBR shelves/piles??
arghhhh! buy new shelves to handle the increasing stash :))
frustrated by 'must reads' - def prefer just choosing a good looking book to read when i have the extra moments to devote to pleasure reading :))

  18. 1. As an adult, I don't really celebrate Halloween any more, but I had great fun when I was a child. I was always a princess or a gypsy. :-) I do like to put out Halloween and fall decorations, though.

    2. Oh gee, my TBR piles...I have quite a few books stacked inside a cabinet in the dining room. I also have 3 boxes hidden under my bed! Shhhh...don't tell my husband! LOL!!!

  19. 1. I never got to dress up as a kid unless due to my parents religeous beliefs. Now days with my own family we carve pumpkins and let my girls dress up and trick or treat. B. If I had to dress up I would probably go as a devil in a red dress and make my hubby to be an angel.

    2. My TBR shelves are seperated by YA (that my daughter can read) and adult. From there they are seperated by author/series. Once a book has been read it gets moved to the read/to be donated pile. Unless it is a favorite or is signed then I keep it.

  20. 1. a) you're right. my country doesn't actually celebrate it. except for shops and restaurants that want it for commercial appeal. b) i think it would be cool to dress up as a giant book! LOL

    2. do not have a system. more just a pile of my most TBRed and then it depends on my mood or how much time i have to devote to reading the next book. (not so much time, thinner book)
