Sharing Beyond Books #69 Comment Giveaway October 6, 2012

Welcome to another SBB!

Hello again on Saturday Night.  I was up early to man a coffee table at a women's club event this morning so I am tired tonight. :-)  I will be updating the ARC/review lists and uploading a new Christmas list as soon as I finish publishing this post so winners can check the lists.

Thank you to all who shared last week.

It looks like we don't have too many plans for the fall. Several are back in school so busy.  mamabunny13 is doing fall closing while marybelle is doing spring cleaning (on the other side of the world) and nrlymrtl sounds very busy with harvest/farm responsibilities!

Only a handful of us will be reading some horror this month. Many of you do not read horror and many indicate that you don't read seasonally - let's see about question 2 this week. *grin*

The Winner from SBB #68 comments is: #4 Ricki There are still 5 'love' books to pick from and 1 Christmas choice (see my note above about adding more titles to that list soon). WEEK #69 Questions

Q1. Louisa and Mary P ask: When did you first learn to drive or get your driver's license??
A: I know most teens are eager to get their driver's license but I guess I wasn't one of them. I had two older brothers and a sister who was only a year and a half older but we were in the same grades during high school. So they did all the driving. I had a boyfriend in college who taught me how to drive in a 57 Chevy - it was a tank. I did not get my license until I was 21 when I inherited my mother's car as she died of cancer a few months before my 21st birthday. So I had a car before I could drive. Oh yes - I failed the driving part the first time... I crossed over a yellow line. So it took me two times to get the license.

I found this image at Super Chevy.

Q2. After last week's responses I have a follow-up:   When do you start to read Christmas titles??  :-)
A:  I have started looking at Christmas titles although the only one on my list so far is Lady Louisa's Christmas Knight. I actually read my first 2012 Holiday title in June: The Bridge by Karen Kingsbury. Although that wasn't really focused on Christmas as much as a second chance romance. I do love reading Christmas stories and hope to read at least five this year. (Last year it looks like I read five from October through December.)

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far.  Either way - it works for me. :-)  The question list is being replenished!  Thanks for sending in questions!

  1. 1. Awfully late. If I had listened to my parents (which I didn't) I would have made it (and they would have paid for it) when I was 18. Alas I didn't and only ever made my license roughly ten years later. I failed my first driving test too and I know it sounds petty, but it was the inspectors fault *grumbles* and I still remember giving him an ear full in front of everyone else ... of course, later it turned out it wasn't all in my mind, because that guy apparently "didn't like women" and let almost all of them take the test a second time. Good thing my driving instructor managed to get me another inspector for my second try and this time? Easy peasy.

    2. Actually I am already thinking about digging out some Christmasy cozy mysteries from my TBR piles to read them faily soon! :-)

  3. I learnt how to drive & got my license at 18.
It doesn't make any difference to me; I read Christmas titles any time of the year.

  4. 1. I got my permit about a week after I turned 15 1/2 (which was when you could get it at that time). I got my license on my 16th birthday. My last class that day was my easiest, so my mom pulled me out of school early to go take my driving test.
    2. I read Christmas titles whenever they show up on the top of my TBR pile (just like I leave Christmas songs on my iTunes playlist all year round).

    2. anytime during the year.

  6. 1. I am a late driver too. My high school driver's ed teacher was a football coach and he scared the dickens out of me. I didn't get very far because he would tease me and I would cry! I was so glad when that semester was over. My mother took me driving after I got my beginner's permit. I have a weird problem with depth perception, that does not help me with driving! I cannot figure distance very well. I went for my driving test and had to do it again because the tester said that "you are too nervous".

    2. I look at them year round but start reading them in December. However, I sometimes play Christmas music in the summer. I have always been that way.

  7. I learned to drive on an old F150 pickup stick shift. I had a wee little fender accident while on learner's permit at the last turn onto the family house. 8 years later, I was leaving the house and at that same turn I had another accident (only my second one ever). Luckily, no one was hurt, but both cars were totaled. I told my parents they have to move.

I don't really read seasonally, but I might try The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett to get me in the Winter Solstice mood.

  8. I got my license at 16 and two weeks because I failed the test the first time. Living in L.A. it's kind of expected to get your license as soon as you can. The first car I had was a '55 Chevy.

I was moving a bookcase just the other day and started looking at the Christmas books thing it was about time to start reading them. I think maybe when I finish my current book.

  11. I had forgotten about this meme! I'm subscribing via email now so I won't miss anything.

    1. I learned to drive about a year or so before I got my license. We lived in the country so my parents taught me and then I took driver's training. I got my license the day I turned 16. My car was a manual shift so I had to learn how to drive it too!

    2. I've already been thinking about Christmas books, gearing up for my Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge which starts the week of Thanksgiving. I have my eye on the new Richard Paul Evans for sure!

  13. Apparently I'm in a minority here. I got my license on my birthday, as soon as I could. I couldn't wait to get it, and couldn't imagine not having it. To me, it was a sign of independence. Even when I didn't have a car, the license was still a symbol that I could drive and take care of myself.

I don't really read seasonally, so I'll read a Christmas book whenever. I do try to read at least one in December though.

  15. 1. I actually learned to drive at 15 while we living in Florida. But I failed my eye exam during my test for my license. I moved back to New Jersey and after school got married and never ended up getting my license because believe it or not I was petrified to drive with 7 kids in the vehicle. :)

    2. I start reading Christmas stories around Oct/Nov.
Congrats to the winner.GFC follower under Lucky47.

  18. 1. I got my learner's license at 15, and my Dad taught me how to drive. Then I got my official license at 16. I drove sporadically for the first few years because I didn't have my own car.

    2. I love reading Christmas stories. They just have an extra dose of warmth, love, and hope. I usually start mid-Nov., and until the new year, I read nothing but Christmas stories.
