Sharing Beyond Books #64 Comment Giveaway September 1, 2012

Welcome to another SBB!

Hello again on Saturday Night! I've prepared most of this a week ahead so I won't be online too long.

Thank you to all who shared last week.

There weren’t really that many commenters who read cookbooks. And surprisingly, there are several of us who are not cooks!  By far the favorite cookbook/recipes to read were desserts and baking. :-)

Although a handful may google a new food found in a book few of us try the recipes. I have to agree with Texas Book Lover though that the chocolate descriptions in the Lucky Harbor series are sooo tempting.  One of my favorite foods on the cruise ship is the Chocolate Melting Cake with ice cream....YUM!

The Winner from SBB #63 comments is: #16 Texas Book Lover There are still 6 'love' books to pick from and 1 Christmas choice (I guess I'll have to add some titles to that list soon). Texas Book Lover please choose a book (or GC if international) from the remaining Love Books List for Giveaway, remaining Christmas Giveaway Book, OR pick from the Updated ARC/Review List and let me know your choice, your address and a choice of bookmarks by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #64 Questions

Q1. mamabunny asks: What fashion would you like to see come back from this era or any other??
A: What came to mind with this question is: Bell Bottom pants! I do have one pair of flared pants and I always get compliments on them. And maybe because I was in college in the early 70's I love the picture below. :-).

Odd - the ad says this is great for "50s"
but I am sure it was 60s and 70s that were the Psychedelic colors!

Q2. Since I am cruising in Alaska this week let's share Alaska books. Do you have an Alaska related book or two to recommend??
A:  Maybe I will find one on the cruise but if not I am thinking of two books: Molly Harper's How to Flirt With a Naked Werewolf which was set in Alaska and, since we will be visiting this location tomorrow and because I enjoyed the story: The Ketchikan Man by Ciara Lake.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far.  Either way - it works for me. :-)  The question list is being replenished!  Thanks for sending in questions!

Your turn to share:

1. mamabunny asks: What fashion would you like to see come back from this era or any other??

  1. 1) I will have to answer from a Sri Lankan point of view. Saris are becoming simpler, less glitter, more cashmere types, A welcome change and one I am looking forward to.

    2) No to the Alaska theme

  2. 1. I hate to say this, but all that comes to mind are fashion trends I do NOT want to come back, hahaha!

    2. Can't think of any. Though, if I may, I'd like to recommend the TV series "Men in Trees" which is so much fun and, obviously, plays in Alaska.

  3. I knit and I love looking at older books and magazines. These usually have more male models - men looking happy and cool in knitted items! I would like to see this come back into style cause then my man might be persuaded to wear things I knit for him (LOL).

Call of the Wild by Jack London is set in Alaska, but you have probably already read that. There is also Further Tales of the City by Armistead Maurpin.

  4. 1. There's none I want to come back - I just think of earth shoes, jelly shoes (those colored plastic shoes), leg warmers etc NONE that I want to wear again - ha

    2. I don't think I've read any books with an Alaskan theme that weren't for a school project

  5. I have to agree with the bell bottoms and they were definitely late 60s early 70s.

As far as Alaska based or themed books, the only one I know of is one I have but haven't read yet... The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

  8. 1. I do love Tie Dyed clothing. Some of it is very beautiful. I no longer own any. I should I think. My daughter has a gorgeous Tie Dyed T-Shirt in purple.

    2. I actually can't recall reading any books with an Alaskan theme.

  10. I'm with you Martha, I loke bell bottoms. I wore them in the 70's with a fringed belt when I was a teenager.

  12. 1. I do like the bell bottoms too. Maybe more tunics? I don't know. I was born in the late 80s! Don't know much other than tweed and retro clothes (which is a no-no to me, colours are so garish!)

    2. Sorry. I have not read any. When I saw the word Alaska, I immediately though of John Green's Looking for Alaska! But alas, is it not set in Alaska. So...sorry about that. Nothing to add. Happy holiday!

  13. 1. I loved the tie dyed look and the fringed suede and leather vests we wore back in the 70's.

    2. Only books that come to mind are Dani Harper's Changeling trilogy starting with Changeling Moon. It's about shifters who live and work in Alaska.

  14. 1. Maybe corsets. I've always wanted to wear one.
    2. Loved Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong.

  15. 1. Unless it was once fashionable to wear your pj's around I can't say I want any trends to come back in style. And most would look terrible on my shape anyway.

    2. It took me a little bit but I came up with one! Lora Adrian's Shades of Midnight (Kade & Alexandra's) book was set in Alaska. As well as a bits and pieces of a few of the others in this series which I really like!

The only other Alaskan reference I can think of is when Edward retreats to Alaska at the beginning of Twilight.

  16. I hope that you are having a great time. We really enjoyed our Alaskan cruise.
    1. Wow, I don't think there are any old fashions that I would like to see return.
    2. I think Debbie Macomber wrote a series of books set in Alaska. I seem to remember reading a couple.
