Sharing Beyond Books #62 Comment Giveaway August 18, 2012

Welcome to another SBB!

Hello again on Saturday Night! It's been another busy week and I have heard lots of bloggers bemoaning the heat. I guess I don't notice so much since I tend to be indoors most of the time.

Thank you to all who shared last week.

Only a few commenters have re-purposed books for more than giveaways, though many like the crafty ideas. Carol linked to an etsy site where they make purses out of books!  Ricki has made bookmarks out of a book torn in the mail.  Marianne has made plaques from old books - sounds interesting. And nrlymrtl has turned some damaged books into compost... not pretty but environmentally friendly. :-)

All but a few people do like to watch some of the Olympics. The favorite sports seemed to be gymnastics and swimming. I was sorry to read that several people thought the coverage this year has been lacking.

The Winner from SBB #61 comments is: #9 nrlymrtl  There are still 6 'love' books to pick from and 1 Christmas choice (I guess I'll have to add some titles to that list soon). nrlymrtl please choose a book (or GC if international) from the remaining Love Books List for Giveaway, remaining Christmas Giveaway Book, OR pick from the Updated ARC/Review List and let me know your choice, your address and a choice of bookmarks by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #62Questions

Q1. Marjorie asks: Do you ever listen to the radio??
A: I rarely listen to radio anymore. Most of the time I will have a book going in print, ebook or audio. I will occasionally listen to my choir CDs in the car to learn the songs. And my DH will put on 80s music, rock and roll or country gospel, depending on his mood, when we are sitting by the pool.

Q2. My question: Is there a book that has gotten a lot of buzz and hype that you wouldn't or don't want to read??
A:  First I will say I haven't read the Twilight series and don't plan to although my son said I should try it. But this past year there was a lot of buzz about Fifty Shades of Grey.  I guess I could start by not being interested in something touted as 'virgin and erotic.'  However, several people have told me that it is the equivalent of 'housewife porn'. Looking at the mixed reviews and few excerpts (I do investigate before I just say "no") the writing does not sound particularly well done and the plot idea does not draw me in.  Sooo - this is one title I am passing on and have no plans to read (and I have no interest in the movie either).

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far.  Either way - it works for me. :-)  The question list is being replenished!  Thanks for sending in questions!

Your turn to share:

  1. 1. Whenever I am driving, I have the radio on...unless I have an audio book, or course. At home, I listen to iTunes whenever I am on my computer. My alarm clock, though, is still a good old radio alarm.
    2. Usually a lot of hype surrounding a book puts me off from reading it. Now, this has led to me missing some good books when everyone was talking about them, and some books I have gone and read after the hype calmed down.

  2. 1) Very little radio listening.

    2) The Stieg Larsson series. I read one and that was enough for me.

  3. 1. I rarely listen to the radio. In the car I find it distracting and at home the only radio I have is built into my toaster :-) but not that I think about it, every once in a while when I'm chopping onions or some such I'll turn it on.

    2. You wouldn't believe the books I haven't read, because of the hype. Well, maybe you would. Let's start with Harry Potter, then of course Twilight, and as of lately 50 Shades. To be fair, those simply aren't genres I have a tendency to read, though I've been known to try myself on books which I'd normally not read if they come with recommendations from readers/bloggers I trust. The only books I can imagine reading one day are the Harry Potter ones, but the other two? No way.

  4. I don't listen to the radio. I find I prefer the quiet.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY came immediately to mind. I will not be reading it. It just does not appeal to me.

  5. I don't listen to the radio often, and we got rid of the satellite tv years ago. I still read the news on El Internet, but overall I have avoided the hype on books except for some of the biggies like Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, & 50 Shades of Grey. While I have read 2 of the 4 series mentioned above, it was through stumbling upon them and personal friend reference and not thru hearing about them thru media.

  8. I always listen to the radio in the car.

I have zero desire to read the Fifty Shades of Grey series but, there are a lot of other series that I won't read either.

  9. 1. I love to listen radio. Mostly I listen radio while I am doing my mathematics homework and while traveling in a car. Whenever i do not feel like reading during nighttime I listen to radio. :)
    2. As for the books with too much hype... it does not matter to me if the blurbs and excerpts are interesting and if there are some really nice reliable reviews on the books i will go for it... (i also thought about 50 shades of grey when i read your question :) )

  12. I listen to the radio in the car when I'm not alone. If I am alone (or it's just me and my son) I listen to an audiobook.

I haven't, and have no plans to, read Twilight or 50 Shades of Grey. Neither book interests me.

  13. If I can find an oldies station, 50's, 60's music I definitely will listen to the radio. Hard to find a good station like nowadays.
I agree with everyone above not into those types of books myself.

  14. Do you ever listen to the radio?? only in the car when i need to know the time ! :)

2.Is there a book that has gotten a lot of buzz and hype that you wouldn't/ don't want to read??
Same response as your own, Martha. Not the least interested. I have waaay to many great books needing my time & I really do value my reading time to commit it to what others deem worthy !:)

  15. 1. Rarely. The only time would be when I'm driving but I usually turn on my mp3 player instead of the radio nowadays.
    2. For some reason I'm totally turned off the Twilight series.

    I'm an international reader. Thanks!

  17. 1. Sometimes, when I feel like listening to the latest pop music.

    2. Not really... sometimes, I actually might feel like checking out a book for myself to see what the hype was all about, provided that it interests me outside of the hype of course. As for 50 Shades of Grey, I don't have any desire to read it, but it's not really because of the hype now. The main reason for me is because I've actually already skimmed some chapters of it when it was free and available online as a fanfic called Master of the Universe, and since I'm not really a fan of BDSM and like you Martha, I didn't think it was particularly well written either, I would not be spending any more time on it.

  18. 1. I listen to the radio in my truck with when my family is with me. When it's just me I listen to books.

    2. I will probably never read Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Even though I have heard they are great after watching the movies there would be too many spoilers plus there are too many other books I want to read instead.

  19. My father is hard of hearing so when he is listening to the radio I am listening to the radio unless I tune him out via an audio book.

  20. 1. In the car. Since I don't have a radio in the house. Unless it's my mp3 player and that, I listen to my songs, not radio channels.

    2. I DO NOT read horrors. No matter how good it is supposed to be. I haven't read LOTR either. Not really planning to. I have too many tomes to read rather than that one.

It's interesting how many people here don't want to read 50 shades. I am currently reading Book 1. So far so good actually. Have not gotten to pron bits yet but it's actually really funny! The dialogue bits! LOL. Just my 2 cents.

  21. 1. Sometimes when I can't sleep I do turn on the radio.
    2. Mmm, well, everyone has read the Dragon Tattoo series, but to be honest I don't want to star a series that will never be finished.
