Sharing Beyond Books #22 Comment Giveaway November 12, 2011

Hello There - Welcome again to Saturday Night and Sharing Beyond Books!
Thanks for your comments this past week.

I found it interesting that most of us do not have traditions for Anniversary gifts. :-) Ricki is the only one that tries to match the gift to the traditional anniversary guide. Most of us are inclined to have a dinner together and I think Margaret is right that dinner is a safe choice instead of "guessing" at a gift.

It sounds like most countries, though not all, do use Day Light Savings. I really never thought about it being done in other countries. I don't think many of us like it being dark when we come home from work but scottsgal is right that it is safer for the kids in the morning.  Elizabeth was the farthest from me of those that compared time - she is 8 hours ahead of Central time; Spav was the next farthest at 7 hours ahead. Although Marybelle didn't compare time, she is the farthest away in QLD which I think is a whole 16 hours ahead of me.:-)

WEEK #22 Questions

Q1. Winnie provides the question this week:  What do you think about weird character names? Does it drive you crazy not knowing whether you pronounce or read it properly?
A: Weird names do make me wonder. Even when I listen to Audible or Kindle I wonder if the narrator is saying the name right if it isn't said the way I would say it. Only once in a while does it drive me crazy.

Q2. The holidays are here. Where did you get your favorite Thanksgiving recipe from (mother, grandmother, etc.)?? What is it?
A:  As I have mentioned before my DH is the cook around our house. I could ask him where he got his fav Thanksgiving recipe but instead I am going to tell you about one he sort of made up that we all love! We call them Bob's Stuffin' Muffins. It is a version of stuffing with cranberries made in muffin tins - they are yummy. I found this picture at Rachel Ray's blog and it is possible that he got the idea for the muffin tins there since he used to watch her show. His recipe is different though.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question FormAt the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far.  Either way - it works for me. :-)

Your turn to share:

  1. I hadnt given the names thing a thought even! it would not bother me at all.

Don't do thanksgiving in this part of the world.

  2. 1. What do you think about weird character names? Does it drive you crazy not knowing whether you pronounce or read it properly? I skim over names I can't readily pronounce: names my brain does not really register. I don't like having to concentrate on the names. It detracts from the story.

    2. The holidays are here. Where did you get your favorite Thanksgiving recipe from (mother, grandmother, etc)?? What is it? We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia. We have a lot of our own National days. Most of the food we celebrate with differs from family to family. Traditions often handed down through the generations.

  3. 1. I like some different names depending on the genre and time period for the book. I tend to like the names found in western romances

    2. My grandma has a cinnamon peach cake recipe she always made for Thanksgiving that's awesome

  4. 1. I don't mind weird names in fantasies, but sometimes it feels like authors try to find the most bizarre names for YA characters. It seems more realistic when the character has a name that you might come across in an average group of teens. It doesn't have to be super common, but just believable.
    2. I got my pumpkin cheesecake recipe from a Philly cheesecake cookbook my mom has, but I do not think she ever made it. About ten years ago, I didn't want the pumpkin pie my mom was planning on making, so she told me to find something else and I could make it. I found the pumpkin cheesecake and have been making it for Thanksgiving ever since. It is always a big hit.

  5. 1. I don't mind them as long as there aren't a whole lot on a page, cuz then I just skim and I do so loathe skim reading!

    2. First, we should never assume everyone is American and celebrating Thanksgiving soon...I already had mine last month...and its all about the stuffing...traditional, ole fashioned dressing...yum yum yummersssss~!!

  6. I think sometimes there can be a place for weird names, like in a out-of-this-world dystopian.

My favorite recipe came from my mother, French Silk Pie :) edysicecreamlover18@gmailDOTcom

  7. Thank you, thank you, thank you for my win!

I kind of like weird character names but it does drive me crazy wondering if I am pronoucing it properly. What really drives me crazy is hearing how someone else is pronouncing it after I've made up my mind how I think it should be and am committed to it! (because I'm the one that's usually wrong) lol

  8. 1. I like weird names if it fits the genre, or the book, like I'm reading a fairy book right now, so I like weird names for the faeries :)

    2. I don't cook. But my favourite dish is this sweet potatoes, with mini marshmallows on it with cranberries, and brown sugar, that is just yummy!

  9. 1. Sometimes it does drive me crazy when I'm trying to figure out how the name is pronounced.
    2. I'm not much of a cook and leave the Thanksgiving meal to my dad and my cousin.

  10. Weird names don't bother me as long as they fit the story. In Paranormal Romance I expect it. :)
My favorite recipe for Thanksgiving are my Turnips and potatoes mashed together with butter/cream and a little nutmeg. A dish my Mom made every year and I continued making it when I had my own family. It's so delicious.Especially with a little gravy over them. To me anyway. lol Thanks for this chance.

  12. 1. Yes! I know that I always get them wrong. Whenever I communicate them to a friend who has read the same book we always say them differently. I'm sure mine is wrong.

    2. I don't really have any traditional meals for the holidays but i do always bath my turkey in lemon juice as my Mom used to do before the other preparations. Helps give it a nice hint of lemon.

  14. I'll admit that it does drive me a bit crazy at first when I encounter weird names in a book, not knowing whether I am pronouncing it right or not. But once I've sort of made up my mind on how it sounds as I read the book, then it wouldn't really bother me anymore... unless I find out that I pronounced it totally wrong. In general though, I do like and embrace unique/weird names because one of my favourite genres to read is Paranormal Romance and there can be plenty of unique/weird names in this genre.

  15. 1. I don't really like weird names, but I always make sure that I pronounce and read them properly.

    2. I got my favorite Thanksgiving recipe from the internet (along with many other favourites). Here it is: Maple Roast Turkey and Gravy http://allrecipes.com/recipe/maple-roast-turkey-and-gravy-2/detail.aspx?src=3828_1

  16. It really bugs me when I'm not sure how to pronounce a word so the same goes for weird character names. I find myself concentrating too much on the name and not paying attention to the book. Authors take note! LOL!

My favorite Thanksgiving recipe comes from an old cookbook my mom used when I was a kid and gave to me when I left home. It's called The Settlement Cookbook and it has an excellent recipe for Stuffing with Almonds. It's always a big hit at my family's Thanksgiving get-togethers.

I've been seriously out of the loop lately, what with NaNoWriMo and a lot of stuff going on at my boys' school. So sorry I've been neglectful in stopping by. Hope all is well!
