Guest Post and Giveaway by Lisa Renee Jones

Please welcome Lisa Renee Jones, Author of The Story That is Sterling who shares a Guest Post on Planning the Series. Make sure you read to the end to find out how to enter for Lisa's Giveaway!

Thank you for having me here today at Martha’s Bookshelf to celebrate the release of THE STORM THAT IS STERLING!

Today I’m talking about planning the series or letting it happen since Sterling is a part of a series. I’ve written a number of series but probably the most comparable to my Zodius series is my KNIGHTS OF WHITE with Harlequin. With both my Zodius series and my Knights of White the books each lead to the next book in the series. With my Knights of White I usually left a bit of a cliffhanger. The main story was resolved with a HEA but the next character got into some sort of mess. This made it especially important to have planned the next book in the series. I knew from book 1 of that series that a romance I hinted at in book 1 would be headed a certain place in book 6. My readers jumped on that and had lots of questions after each book about that teasing storyline. I had something about that couple in all of the books.

In the Zodius series, I’ve planned in advance and I’ve known where I was going from the beginning. However, I have to say, that the leader of the Renegades, Caleb, hasn’t cooperated. I had his story planned a certain way and a female character has demanded she be his love interest and I just didn’t see that coming. It doesn’t fit my plan but yet, it is the plan now. In DANGER THAT IS DAMION you will have a very good idea who Caleb’s love will end up being. So, while I’m for planning, I do let my characters lead me. That is part of the fun of writing and living the story as I write it.

In DANGER THAT IS DAMION you will meet Chale and he is my planned hero for book 4. I love Chale who is a Harley riding, wild and wicked, man with a Sterling like sense of humor. I hope you will get as attached to him in book 3 as I did. Now, in Sterling’s story Damion is a HUGE part of the book. You will know him well by the end of book 2.

To celebrate Sterling’s release I have a bag of books and yummy holiday treats. All you have to do is comment. Tell me what you like, or dislike, when you are reading a series. And how many books into a series do you read? 3? 10? What makes you lose interest?

Booklist review:
The Storm That Is Sterling.
Jones, Lisa Renee (Author)
Nov 2011. 384 p. Sourcebooks/Casablanca, hardcover, $6.99. (9781402251597).
The exciting Zodius futuristic suspense series features soldiers enhanced by a GTECH secret military experiment. Sterling Jeter, who is assigned to guard Rebecca Burns, the scientist working on an antidote for the highly addictive and fatal drug ICE. But Rebecca is also the high-school dream Sterling was never able to realize. She has cancer and tangling with bad guys who want her science skills for their ends has left her an ICE addict, too. She wants to take advantage of her time left with Sterling, while Sterling wants to protect her. As danger mounts, they try to sort out who is trustworthy. The GTECH and science details can best be followed with the help of the index, but they do not overwhelm the appealing characters or action. Jones’ suspense truly sizzles with an energy similar to FBI tales with a paranormal twist by Julie Garwood or Suzanne Brockmann. Alpha, military, and paranormal romance readers will want Jones’ entire series.

Sterling Jeter has remarkable powers and has shown himself
to be just about indestructible. But beautiful, brilliant Rebecca
Burns knows that even a Super Soldier needs comfort, and so
much more…
But she can see that deep down,
he’s just a man…
Sterling and Rebecca’s teenage romance was interrupted,
but years later the heat between them flares back to life.
Even though it endangers everything they’re fighting for, it’s
impossible to resist picking up right where they left off…

  1. I love reading series, I think the author gets a chance to really let us get to know all the characters because they can keep coming back as secondary characters in all the books. I also like that the secondary characters get to have their own books and we get to know them as well.

  2. Great post Lisa!!! Humm I will read a series probably to about the 15th or so book, then I seem to be ready for it to move on. Most often I prefer books that one series may end and then lead to a break off series.....

What causes me to lose interest? Now that's harder, could be I just get tired of a couple not having a HEA, or I'm ready for things to "end already" meaning time to move to a new story ARC..........or could be my mood.

*don't enter me in the giveaway*

  3. if this is an international giveaway i would love to be entered

I love series the number of books is not relevant really what i want is that the story goes on not always the same thing, drama again and again. And i don't like to wait ^^;; so if i read a long serie generally it has been published from sometimes because i couldn't wait 10years to have the end ( or perhaps i could since it was i'm doing with my manga^^;;)

  4. Great post.
I like the continuation of the story in a series and secondary characters getting their own books. You also get to learn more of the world building. What I dislike, although I understand for new readers,is the recap from previous books.I've read the books from the start I don't need a reminder.
How many books in a series do I read? All of them..even if they get stall and should have ended a few books back.I have to know how it ends.

  5. I love great characters! I like when series spotlight sets of characters, but I also like when a series continues the story about the original characters. I read all the books in a series, I LOVE when I find a series that has already been finished so I don't have to wait for the next ones. Thanks for hosting. I am an old follower.

  7. I love series books. It doesn't matter how many books there are as long as their all different with their own storyline. The worst part for me would be waiting years between books. I love reading about all the characters eventually becoming secondary characters after their own stories. It's like a family reunion and you can't help becoming attached to all the characters. Thanks so much for this opportunity ladies.GFC name is Lucky47

  8. If the author creates characters & worlds I absolutely adore, the series could go on forever & I would be very happy. I don't like having to wait for the next book in a series. Sometimes I will wait for them all to be out before I begin.

  9. I love reading series books. But I have noticed in many when the author gets past 3 or 4, it just doesn't work for me. Unless the writing is fresh and just plain fantastic. I enjoyed the article Lisa. And the Knights of White was a great series.

  10. I love to read a series that ends after about 7 books, and even that is pushing it. I enjoy getting to know the characters better, seeing them mature and make decisions. I like how it feels as if the author is getting better too, I think I can tell. Thank you for the awesome giveaway! GFC Krystal Larson edysicecreamlover18@gmailDOTcom

  11. I love series. I always want o know what happens next and whats going on with the secondary characters we meet. I really like storylines that can be address in one book but no longer than a trilogy, unless its really involved. I dont mind if the series continues after that but I dont like when they continue too long without some closure. I will read a whole series no matter how long it is, unless the story is just continuing for the sake of having more books or the author severly changes the idea of the series and I am not interested anymore.

  12. I love series and very seldom lose interest, once I get started. Sometimes if the books start seeming too much alike, I will discontinue reading the series.

  13. I personally love reading book series and don't want my favourite ones to end anytime soon if there are more stories to tell with the same main/secondary characters. What I really like about a series is seeing how recurring characters grow and how their relationships further develop. Also, it's great to see more world-building and discovering more of the world the series is set in along with characters we've come to know and love. As for what I dislike, I guess one thing is that sometimes a series just gets dragged out for a bit too long. I know this is a bit of a contradiction to wanting a favourite series to continue on, but I only want it to continue on if there are stories to tell at a good pace, like not getting dragged out for 2 to 3 books if it could be told in one tightly written book for example.
