There's a thin line between duty and desire...

Giles Beaumont is stuck in a role he never wanted, trying to safeguard a woman of incendiary powers who doesn't think she needs a protector.

Cecily Sutton has no idea of the enormity of her true task and no inkling of the effect she's having on Giles. But somewhere along their perilous journey together, they'll have no choice but to uncover the deep, dark connection that binds them one to the other...

Lose yourself in renowned author Kathryne Kennedy's gorgeous love story set in a lush world made of equal parts wonder and danger.
Review: This author presents romance in an imaginative fantasy world.

Cecily Sutton is a Halfbreed - the daughter of a human mother and the Elven Lord of Dewhame, who has power over water. When the magic of Halfbreed children is too strong they are killed.  As a young child, during her escape, Cecily called the power of the storms and killed many soldiers.  Traumatized by that event she has tried to live a quiet life with her mother in a cottage by the sea.  Her adoptive father, Thomas, is an active and key member of the Rebellion who seek to overcome the wicked Elven Lords.  Thomas is always off on missions and in his absence he assigned Giles Beaumont to protect Cecily.

Giles, who has some elven beauty but little magical power, has chaffed at being bound in a small village. He and his magical sword are eager to be off to battle for the Rebellion.  As a young teen Cecily was enamored of the handsome blacksmith and jealous of the other village girls he took to his room.  She tried to seduce him but was humiliated by his rejection. She has always treated him with a cold shoulder since that night.  Giles spent hours watching the lithe girl turn into a beautiful woman. Although he desires her, he knows that she is intended for someone better than him.

Cecily and Giles wield their powers to battle the enemy when their village is attacked by Elven soldiers .  Now it is no longer safe to stay in the village. Cecily and Giles set off to find one of the Rebellion leaders to seek help to find Thomas.  Giles fights hard to resist his desire for Cecily and she slowly recognizes that his reluctance to bed her is one more part of his protecting her. She just has to convince him that she doesn’t really need, or want, all of his protection.

They face obstacles, wicked magic and monsters on their quest for Thomas and their subsequent mission.  I really enjoy the fantasy world and the magical powers the author has created.  I liked the primary characters although I found the initial antagonism a bit dry. I really liked some of the secondary characters, some good and some evil. The first part of the book moved slowly for me but I zipped through the last third where it is packed with adventure and action.  This is the second book in the series and although it can be read as a standalone I recommend reading The Fire Lord's Lover first. I am still interested in future installments with the different powers in each of the seven kingdoms.
