Review: General Dominic Raikes is half Elven and half human. His father Mor’ded is a pure bred Elven and the Imperial Lord, also known as The Fire Lord, leader of Firehame in London. Mor’ded is evil and he taunts Dominic for being half breed and not good enough. He also uses any weakness that Dominic displays and punishes Dominic with great torture. Dominic presents an icy hard facade to the world to protect himself and any whom he might learn to care for.

Lady Cassandra comes to marry Dominic under an arranged marriage but secretly she is part of the rebellion and trained as an assassin. Dominic is drawn to the brave Cassandra but he scorns her, trying to protect her from his father’s notice. I really liked Cassandra’s courage and strength and the way she maintained her pride even when she is mocked by the court and has to stand all alone. I also liked the uniqueness of her giftedness and weapon.

The country is divided into separate realms, each of which has its own unique gifts such as fire, jewels, water, dreams and more. There are few pure breds left so the half breed children are tested to find the strongest. Supposedly those with the strongest magical gifts will be sent to the ancient homeland, Elfhame, to live a privileged life of luxury and training. With the help of a fierce and proud dragon, Dominic discovers a terrible truth about Elfhame and the true extent of his father’s evil.

Cassandra has her goal fixed to get near enough to Mor’ded to kill him. Dominic doesn’t believe she stands a chance and although Dominic’s powers have grown stronger, a fact which he has hidden, are they strong enough to challenge and defeat Mor’ded? Is it possible that somehow they can work together and be stronger together?

It was wonderful to watch the love develop between Dominic and Cassandra and especially to see Dominic’s heart come back to life under the sunshine that Cassandra brings. Here is a section I particularly liked of the dragon speaking to Dominic: “That’s the problem with opening yourself to human emotion. You become capable of such great love...and great sorrow. Will you allow it to strengthen your power or weaken it?”

The fantasy world is well developed with lots of uniqueness. The details are consistent and the writing flows well. I’m still pondering the ending as it is happy for now but fraught with danger ... perhaps a sequel or series is planned for one or more of the other realms? I would enjoy reading more by this author.  This is a good read for fantasy, paranormal or historical romance fans.
