Sourcebooks' Special eBook Offers for January - Time Sensitive!

CHECK OUT THESE SPECIALS for some great reads at great prices - from info sent in from Sourcebooks! Don't miss the first title link which is active TODAY!!

Gabrielle Kimm’s His Last Duchess is the Daily Deal on Amazon Kindle today. You can get it for only .99 cents here!

That’s my last duchess painted on the wall…
Seduced by the hot sun and blinding passions of Renaissance Italy, sixteen-year-old Lucrezia de’ Medici sees a gilded life stretching ahead. Her wealthy new husband handpicked her to be his bride, and his great castle in Ferrara will be her playground. But Alfonso d’Este, Duke of Ferrara quickly proves to be just as dangerous and mysterious as he is dark and handsome, and the stone walls of the castle seem to trap Lucrezia like a prison.

Only the duke’s lover Francesca seems able to tame his increasing fury, as his desperate need to produce an heir drives him deep into precarious obsession. With her head full of heartbroken dreams, Lucrezia flees from him down a dangerous path that may cost her everything.

Step into the elegant world of the Robert Browning poem “My Last Duchess,” as imagined by Gabrielle Kimm, where she brings to life the passions and people of sixteenth-century Tuscany and Ferrara. It is a chilling story of forbidden love and dark decadence that will haunt you.

“A saucy account of Lucrezia de’ Medici’s ill-fated marriage, inspired by Robert Browning’s poem “My Last Duchess.”
            - Kirkus

“Kimm neatly ties up all the loose ends while cleverly setting the stage for a spin-off. Poetry enthusiasts will be intrigued and historical fiction fans will appreciate the authentic Renaissance-era detailing.”
            -Booklist

“This strong first novel is marked by well-developed, memorable protagonists and a pacing that quickens and builds readers' anxiety as the story progresses.”
            - Library Journal

The manor itself has secrets, with fires that blaze constantly in the hearths, portraits of Korban in every room, and deceptive mirrors on the walls. With an October blue moon looming, both the living and the dead learn the true power of their dreams.

Book Review and eBook Giveaway: Sierra Bride by Suzanne Barrett

This is a warm, lush historical western.
Sierra Bride
by  Suzanne Barrett
Release Date: November 6, 2011
Publisher: Turquoise Morning Press
ARC pdf pages: 207

Genre: Historical Romance, Western
My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0

Description:
Sierra County, California - 1883

Widowed rancher Wade Guthrie needs help raising his unruly young daughter and advertises for a housekeeper. Instead, he finds himself saddled with a mail order bride.

Irish immigrant Corrie Kiernan needs a place to hide. Witness to a brutal murder at the mill where she worked, she’ll do anything to escape the killer who now threatens her life, even if it means marrying a stranger and weaving a web of deception. Falling in love with the handsome rancher is easy, but can a man who values honesty above everything else love a woman whose life is a lie?
Review: I have come to really enjoy Ms. Barrett’s rich and warm writing.

Corrie is brave and industrious. After she witnesses a murder at her mill job in Massachusetts she flees to California. When she arrives in Sierra, Corrie learns that the rancher she is supposed to wed doesn’t want a wife.

Wade is upset to learn his friend has tried to arrange a mail order bride instead of a housekeeper. The girl is a redheaded beauty but he isn’t interested as he knows he won’t love another women.  He intends to ship her back until he discovers her singing at the local saloon.  Then he insists on marrying her only to protect her.

Wade brings her home to a dirty, untended cabin and introduces her to his young daughter, Charity, who resents a new woman in the house. Corrie lied in her reply to the bride ad. She can’t cook, she is not from a wealthy home with all the social manners to teach Charity and it appears that Charity has more education already than Corrie has.  But Corrie is willing to work hard. She’ll chop wood, scrub floors, wash windows, sew clothes, even work with the horses if Wade would let her. She is intent on making herself useful so that Wade will appreciate her.

Wade is concentrating on his struggles to keep his mustang ranch and tries to ignore Corrie and keep her at a distance.  Slowly Wade begins to recognize the fresh life that Corrie brings to the household. Then the killer shows up claiming to have authority to arrest Corrie for murder.  Since everything she has told Wade is a lie, who will he believe? Even if she can escape the killer can she win Wade’s love?

The characters are well written and likeable and the setting is beautifully described. The relationship between Corrie and Wade builds slowly to a sensual union.  Although the plot is not so new I was interested to see where the story went - when and how the killer would show up and how Wade would react when he discovered all the lies.  That presentation was fine. Although I appreciated that the town folk would support Wade when he ran into trouble I felt  part of the ending was unrealistic and it was too “pat” a conclusion.

I like that this author is consistent with strong characters, vibrant descriptions and natural emotions.  It is interesting to see these strengths applied well in varied settings and genres. I am looking forward to reading a Christmas Novella by Suzanne in the next week or so.

Thank you to Suzanne for the ARC to read and review. Suzanne is generously offering an eBook copy to one lucky commenter.

With his father ill, he returns to help sell the family property and pub, and now, to his dismay, the “sight” has returned. He is soon involved in the archaeological excavation on his family’s land and meets American Rylie Powell. Her father walked out on the family when she was a toddler, and she now believes that Donovan’s father is also hers. Donovan knows in his heart this cannot be true as the attraction between them is palpable. In between checking out DNA tests and family histories, the two become involved with murders past and present stemming from the Troubles, a quest that requires Donovan’s gift. Northern Ireland’s violent past combined with supernatural elements add an intriguing twist to this modern love story.

Women.jpgThe Amazing Women Series
The Amazing Women series from the Amazing People Club offers inspiration and a new way to celebrate women around the world.”  Today, more and more women become doctors, politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists, financial advisers, and take on other roles outside the home.  This, of course, has certainly not always been the case.  The women in our ‘Club’ were trailblazers.  Their stories are a source of inspiration and are revealed through our BioView format.  Each story is a biography – a virtual interview – reflecting the life story of an amazing person.   It offers an interesting and easy way to learn from those who have made major contributions to our world.  Discover how these amazing women lived, loved and worked in their own distinct ways.  We can learn key lessons from each one of them.  In particular, their achievements were a result of their determination to continue on, regardless of how difficult the journey.  They believed in what they had to offer, and used their time well.  Here is a snippet from one of them:-
Florence Nightingale
1820–1910
From the age of 17, I knew my destiny lay with many men
I said ‘no’ to the proposals of marriage that I received
I felt strongly that my role in life was to help others
Beyond my education in Latin, Greek, German, French and Italian
My first name came from the city of Florence in Italy
That is where I was born
My parents came from a well endowed English family
In 1837, “God spoke to me and called me to his service”
They were disappointed and upset when I chose to be a nurse.

Product Description
Aislinn of Bairbhe dreams of becoming a lady knight to honor the death of her fallen brother. To her mother's horror, King Patrick grants Aislinn's wish and she begins her long years of training.

Despite the mockery of the other pages, and the disdain of Prince Caelan who also trains to be a knight, Aislinn commits herself to her dreams and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and bravery. Through the years, Aislinn and Caelan grow from sparring classmates to good friends. They both know that someday Caelan will marry for the sake of the kingdom, but even that cannot keep them from falling in love.

The threat of war with the Speicans is a constant threat, and one that grows more frightening as she and Caelan train toward their eventual knighthood. Aislinn has committed herself to serving Arnhem, and has promised herself as King's Champion when Caelan claims the throne. She is willing to give up everything... her childhood, her life, even her heart for Arnhem. No matter the pain it brings.
Review: This is a sweet story covering the challenges facing a girl’s unique journey to knighthood...and more. The book covers Aislinn’s years from 1155 to 1169 AD.

Aislinn is a determined young girl of 8 when she seeks permission to train to become a lady knight. The King agrees to a probational two year period and her work and struggles against prejudice begins. The King allows another young girl, a street “rat” to train too. Instead of helping each other the girls are jealous and distrustful. Unlike the other outgoing girl, Aislinn, who has some reading and math skills already, has few friends among the boys.  She is lucky to get Geoffrey, a friend of Caelan, as a mentor and Prince Caelan himself as a silent watcher/companion.

As the pages grow to squires they grow closer together and Aislinn finds others to help her with the areas that she needs help with. The “brain” helps her with math. The stable master tries to help her when she is assigned a beautiful horse who just won’t respond to the reins. She figures out that she needs to start from scratch to train Dream Rider without saddle trappings and finally she makes head way.  Aislinn even takes secret weapon training from a mysterious Shadow Warrior, Ryu.  These warriors are not trusted by either Arnhems or Speicans and had something to do with the war between the two nations.

Slowly the other pages and teachers learn to respect Aislinn for her unyielding determination in tackling her challenges.  Aislinn struggles with her emotions as well as her mental and physical training. As she matures she also has to struggle with conflicting desires between her dream to be a lady knight and her growing feelings and friendship with Prince Caelan who is destined to be married for political and royal position.

Prince Caelan is quiet and intense. It is clear he likes Aislinn from the beginning even if they seem to quarrel and set each other on edge. He admires her and tries to help when her stubbornness will let her accept help. But he is the Prince and is well trained to understand his duties which will include marriage as arranged by his parents. He struggles with his clear feelings for Aislinn which conflict with the duty to his position.

This book is the author's debut novel. Although I feel the writing could use a little more depth, which I think will come with experience, the story concept, plot and action are sound. Also the book seemed well researched offering some interesting insight in the life of pages and squires. It is an easy going story with sweet primary characters, harsh villains, plenty of action, emotional stress, dangerous enemies, battles and magical mysteries. At the end of the book there are still open questions to be further explored in the next story in the series which I am confidant will be another lovely read.

The more you know about the future, the more there may be to fear.
Tara Sheridan is the best criminal profiler around - and the most unconventional. Trained as a forensic psychologist, Tara also specializes in Tarot card reading. But she doesn't need her divination skills to realize that the new assignment from her friend and sometime lover, Agent Harry Li, is a dangerous proposition in every way.

Former Cold War operatives, all linked to a top-secret operation tracking the disposal of nuclear weapons in Russia, are disappearing. There are no bodies, and no clues to their whereabouts. Harry suspects a conspiracy to sell arms to the highest bidder. The cards - and Tara's increasingly ominous dreams - suggest something darker. Even as Tara sorts through her feelings for Harry and her fractured relationships with the mysterious order known as Delphi's Daughters, a killer is growing more ruthless by the day. And a nightmare that began decades ago in Chernobyl will reach a terrifying endgame that not even Tara could have foreseen…
Review: This book is packed full of action, unique characters and interesting data.

Tara is a sharp, professional forensic psychologist and profiler. Her tools however are unique. She is  associated with, but not quite part of, a group of women oracles known as Delphi’s Daughters. Each woman in the group has a unique skill and together they are intended to help protect the world about them.  Tara’s special ability is in reading Tarot cards. The cards almost slide out of the deck to help give her clues to the people and circumstances she is facing.

Harry is part of a Department of Justice Special Projects team where he is apparently accustomed to seeing some weird things.  Although he wouldn’t normally accept that Tarot cards could be of any use he has seen Tara in action and acknowledges that her hunches based on the cards are accurate and very helpful.

The villain in this story is rather alarming. The secrets he is selling are dangerous. As they chase after him they begin to think of him as a Chimera and the more clues they get, unfortunately from the crime scenes of missing spies, the more perplexed the team becomes.

This book is full of lots of great details from Tarot readings to the history and horrors of Chernobyl. I have mixed feelings about the Tarot readings but since I had little knowledge of them I found the descriptions very interesting.  The details of the damage done by the nuclear disaster is chilling especially in light of the recent tragedy in Japan.

There are several secondary characters with quirks and catchy or sometimes fiery personalities.  The Delphi Daughters are peripheral but the Pythia, the leader, is particularly interesting. There is humor added to the tense government departments as Tara, Harry and a few other team members race to catch the criminal who is killing spies and selling deadly secrets. I really liked the whole combination of fantasy and suspense and the multiple but distinct characters. The author's work experiences, including politics, criminology and technology, helped to make the story seem very authentic even if it is fantasy.

This is a very engaging read and fast paced as it keeps you wanting to know what will happen and how Tara will handle her dreams, her cards and ultimately the killer.  Book two with Tara and Harry worked fine as a stand alone, however, it did make me want to read the first book and check out other books by this author.
