Lance Erlick Guest Post, Book Spotlight and Tour Giveaway

Please see my review post HERE.

AUTHOR GUEST POST:

INTERVIEW WITH ELENA PYETROV
Where are you from? Tell us a little about your family.
My parents were very much the odd couple. My mom was Navajo. My father immigrated to the United States as a boy from Eastern Europe. They met in college and fell in love, which caused my mother’s family to disown her. In return, she turned her back on her culture, depriving me of my heritage, though to be honest, I was more interested as a child in my father’s stories about space. After winning my mom’s hand in marriage, my father was accepted to the astronaut program, which involved us moving and him being absent in training or on missions. He finally got what he really wanted, a trip out to Jupiter to explore. That’s where he disappeared, eighteen years ago. His ship vanished with no further communication.
How did that make you feel?
His mission caused him to miss my sixteenth birthday, for which I cursed him. Then my brother Leo committed suicide and my mom died shortly afterwards of a broken heart. I was full of anger over my father abandoning us. Yet somehow he’d gotten under my skin to the point I had to go into space myself, to see what he saw. I guess on some level I thought it would bring me closure and help me move past looking up to him and then losing him. We didn’t even have a body to bury. Now I’m left with regrets that I’d run off his last night on Earth. I wanted to punish him and ended up punishing myself.
Is that why you’re so obsessed, some would say, to venture out to Jupiter?
Obsessed? I’ve heard that many times from those who don’t think we should explore. My father and I used to play this game about first contact with an alien species. How would we be able to communicate? What would be our basis for working together cooperatively as opposed to how humans often react with suspicion when confronted with strangers? Actually, my goal is Europa, the water moon of Jupiter. We’ve speculated for some time that there could be life or the precursors of life beneath or even in the ice sheets. Even if what we find is a primitive life form, it would be a giant step toward exploring the questions my father used to ask. Humans are a curious species. We have a need to know. I certainly do, and not just because of my dad. He opened worlds for me to explore. What really is out there and what can we learn from what we find?
So what did you find on your journey to the outer solar system?
I wouldn’t want to give away too much of the story, but let’s just say we didn’t land where I expected, we didn’t find what we were looking for, but it was vitally important that we found what we did before it was too late for the human race.

Xenogeneic: First Contact
by Lance Erlick

Book Description:
Xenogeneic is a science fiction thriller about first contact with an alien race that lost their civil war and wants to take over Earth.

Dr. Elena Pyetrov’s father vanished in space 18 years ago while searching for extraterrestrial life. As an aerospace engineer, Elena travels into space to search for answers and continue his work. Her ship is pulled off course and crashes. She suspects extraterrestrial interference.

The alien Knoonk lost their civil war in a distant star system and fled to Earth’s neighborhood to hide and regroup. They seek a new home—Earth. Unable to live in Earth’s toxic environment, the aliens kidnap and use humans to genetically modify their species to adapt.

Surviving the crash, Elena and her shipmates are transported to a closed cave system where the Knoonk monitor and control everything. Elena tries to make a connection with her hosts and find ways to work together, but Knoonk leaders rebuff her and force the humans to submit as slaves. The aliens use illusions, distractions, and social experiments to learn from their hostages and keep them off balance. Resistance by captive humans brings swift punishment to break the human spirit.

While Elena continues to look for ways to cooperate with the Knoonk, it becomes apparent that there can be no compromise. The Knoonk want to capture Earth for their species. It is winner take all. With time running out, Elena must dig deep to uncover the alien plan and find a way to stop them before the human race faces enslavement and extinction.

About Laura Fabiani:

In 2008, Laura began blogging about books shortly after she published her first book. She started Library of Clean Reads, a book review blog, and discovered the joy of reviewing a variety of genres. Her children have joined her in this venture and they spend many happy hours reading books together. A Special Care Counselor by profession, Laura has co-led and developed programs for seniors with dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease. She has a passion for the topic of neuroscience and wellness.

Throughout the years she has met and worked with wonderful publishers, both traditional and indie, as well as publicists and authors. Best of all, she discovered the world of book bloggers--a community of special people who spend their precious time sharing their love of books and all things related to books.

Taking part in book tours has always made Laura feel more connected to authors and the publishing field. She organized her own virtual tour when her book was published and she learned several things. As an author, it exposed her to actual reader views and social media. As a book blogger and book tour organizer, it taught her the amount of work it entailed. And she loves it!

But in the chaos of the 2008 financial crisis, Alex suddenly finds herself running into the fire, instead of seeking a safe haven from the flames. Ditching her Ivy League plans, she becomes dedicated to showing she has what it takes in the high-stakes, fast-paced boys’ club of Wall Street trading, as she forges her own path for the first time in her life.

As these volatile changes drive her husband Jamie into his own crisis, Alex is forced to examine the choices she’s made—as she’s torn between her traditional role as wife, and the exciting, Wild West appeal of the trading floor.

When her two worlds suddenly collide, it becomes clear the institutions she once believed in so strongly are more flawed than she ever imagined—and when everything comes crumbling down, it’s up to Alex to decide for herself what’s worthy of putting back together.

“ALIVE AT 5 is extremely well written, fast paced, and what a joy it was to experience, even vicariously, skydiving, scuba diving, and swimming with sharks! EXCERPT:
    “I don’t really expect you to help me, just give me a cover.”
    He groaned in a blast of disbelief. The irony of this situation was not lost on him. If he wanted to remain undercover for real, he had to provide her with a pretend cover. The woman did have balls, he had to admit. He forced a smile. “And if I don’t go along with your plan?”
    “I walk right over to my detective friend and tell him my suspicions.” She stared boldly his way, hands on hips, legs slightly apart. “I’ll tell him that Maxwell was killed and you know all about it. That you’re here investigating the other suspicious deaths. I don’t know what agency you’re working for, but Stuart could find out in less than ten minutes, and I imagine you don’t want to blow your cover just yet. Am I right?”
    His jaw dropped. “Blackmail? Really? Do you know the penalty for that if I really am a cop?”
    She snorted. “Extortion, actually. Well?”
    He snapped his jaw shut. He knew very well what would happen if the adventure vacation company knew his real identity, and what his bosses would do if they found out he was still investigating this case after they’d specifically pulled him off it.
    Wow. She had him. He was impressed, and a little turned on. He ground his teeth. He would agree to her plan, only because he had no choice. He was determined to find and nail the son of a bitch who had killed his uncle.
    “All right, fine,” he reluctantly said.
    She might lose her job if she didn’t come back with her investigative story. But he would definitely lose his job if she exposed his undercover activities and his family’s private life on the news. So he would have to keep the nosy reporter under his thumb and under his control.
    One way or another.

Giveaway: Admission by Jean Hanff Korelitz

Hachette is pleased to announce that the movie adaption of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s ADMISSION hits theaters March 22! Directed by Oscar-nominated Paul Weitz, the film is based on Korelitz’s 2009 novel about 38-year-old Portia Nathan, an Admissions Officer at Princeton University with a settled domestic life and a rewarding, if sometimes punishing, career. The cast includes Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Michael Sheen, Wallace Shawn, and Lily Tomlin.

Hachette has generously allowed me to Host a Giveaway for ONE COPY of the movie-tie-in edition of ADMISSION (one winner, US only).
For years, 38-year-old Portia Nathan has avoided the past, hiding behind her busy (and sometimes punishing) career as a Princeton University admissions officer and her dependable domestic life. Her reluctance to confront the truth is suddenly overwhelmed by the resurfacing of a life-altering decision, and Portia is faced with an extraordinary test. Just as thousands of the nation's brightest students await her decision regarding their academic admission, so too must Portia decide whether to make her own ultimate admission.
Admission is at once a fascinating look at the complex college admissions process and an emotional examination of what happens when the secrets of the past return and shake a woman's life to its core.

The Reluctant Bachelorette
by Rachael Anderson

Unknowingly cast as the bachelorette for her town’s charity event, Taycee Emerson wants out. Especially when she discovers her old teenage crush, Luke Carney, is one of the bachelors and it's up to the viewers--not her--to decide which bachelors stay or go.

Coerced into participating, Taycee does what any self-preserving girl would do. She launches a subtle attack on Luke’s good name with the hope of getting him voted off the show. Unfortunately, Luke's an eye-for-an-eye kind of guy, and when he discovers what she's up to, it means revenge.

But when their pranks go south, will they screw up any chance they have at a future together, or will they be able to forgive and forget and prove that love really does conquer all?

About the Author:

Rachael Anderson is the author of four contemporary romances: Divinely Designed, Luck of the Draw, Minor Adjustments, and The Reluctant Bachelorette. She's the mother of four, can't sing, doesn't dance, and despises tragedies. But she recently figured out how yeast works and can now make homemade bread, which she is really good at eating.

    Novel Publicity Blog Tour: Interview with Alyson Miers and Giveaway

    I shared my review of Chalinder's Walk in the preceding post. Now, please help me welcome the author, Alyson Miers, and Charlinder to share about their experiences.

    Hello Alyson! Thank you for sharing at Reviews by Martha’s Bookshelf. I have really enjoyed Charlinder’s Walk and there are so many issues covered I am not quite sure where to begin the questions!

    Questions for Alyson:

    Q1  How did Charlinder’s Walk develop? Did you have the idea plotted out from beginning to end or did it grow as you wrote?
    I had the idea of the post-Plague world first. I could picture the setting, and there was Eileen and company and all their struggles, but for a long time there wasn't really a plot. In 2006, in the first few months of my Peace Corps assignment of teaching English in Albania, Charlinder presented himself and the idea of a walk around the world took shape. It was a story I couldn't have written without some experience abroad.

    Q2  Had you planned to cover so many social issues when you began to write or did that grow too?
    Looking back, I think the social issues became inevitable once the plot began to take shape. There are just so many ideas banging on steel drums in my head. There will be more social issues covered in my later novels, though perhaps not so many per book.

    Q3  What made you create Gentiola as the unique character she is?
    That is a very tough question. I had just arrived at site for my assignment, I spent a week reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell because I had almost nothing whatsoever to do with my time, and that book seemed to shake something loose in my mind, so that once I was finished with it, Gentiola began talking to me. She's very quintessentially Albanian in some ways, but in other ways she's a citizen of all countries and none at all.

    Q4  Please share with us one surprising thing about your experience writing Charlinder’s Walk, or about something else related to your career as a writer.
    A memory that jumps out is how the comparison---which is not spoken out loud, but sort of left in plain sight in the text---between Charlinder and Marietta's son George. It didn't really occur to me until I was writing the conversation, and this parallel took shape before my eyes. I liked the comparison, so I ran with it.

    Q5  Which word would you use to describe yourself and your personality?
    Creative.

    Q6  Did you include knitting in Charlinder’s skills because it is something you like to do too?
    It's something I like to do, so I can write it accurately, and it's also a handy skill for a post-apocalyptic setting in a non-tropical climate. It's a way of making things with your hands while you're walking somewhere or waiting for something. It's an accessible field on which gender differences can play out, because everyday knitting has nearly always been classified as women's work, and in pre-industrial setting, it's work that absolutely must be done. So, when we have a man who doesn't have a mother, sister or wife to take care of him, he has to take care of himself by doing things that men aren't supposed to do.

    Questions for Charlinder:

    Q1  Which word would you use to describe yourself and your personality?
    Pragmatic.
    Q2  Briefly, can you share with the readers the most important thing you want them to learn from your story?
    This life and this world are all we have, so we need to make the most of the time we get on Earth and be good to the people and creatures around us.

    Q3  What is something you would never be caught dead doing/saying?
    I would never, ever lie to or manipulate a woman so she'll have sex with me. If she isn't interested, I can find someone else who is.

    Q4  What is the one thing your readers would be surprised to know about you?
    I normally hold that the best fistfight is the one you don't get into, but when someone I care about is being insulted, abused or threatened, I'm throwing caution and good sense to the wind and flying into battle.
    Q5 If you (either Alyson or Charlinder) could have readers finish a sentence what would it be?

    This is from Charlinder:
    The best thing you can give to someone is......?
    Thank you again for sharing time with my blog followers and me.
    GIVEAWAY!
    Novel Publicity Blog Tour Notes: Wanna win a $50 gift card or an autographed copy of Charlinder's Walk? Well, there are two ways to enter...
    1. Leave a comment on my blog answering Charlinder's Question 5 above. One random commenter during this tour will win a $50 gift card. For the full list of participating blogs, visit the official Charlinder's Walk tour page.

    About the author: Alyson Miers was born into a family of compulsive readers and thought it would be fun to get on the other side of the words. She attended Salisbury University, where she majored in English Creative Writing for some reason, and minored in Gender Studies. In 2006, she did the only thing a 25-year-old with a B.A. in English can do to pay the rent: joined the Peace Corps. At her assignment of teaching English in Albania, she learned the joys of culture shock, language barriers and being the only foreigner on the street, and got Charlinder off the ground. Book Description
    Publication Date: February 19, 2012
    After a hasty promise to her dying fiancé jeopardizes the future of his illegitimate child, Lady Leah Sheridan vows to make amends for the gentleman’s lack of honor by personally seeing to his son’s financial needs. When the boy’s heartless mother abandons him, Leah finds herself nearing a disastrous scandal. To make matters worse, her fiancé’s older brother returns to England demanding answers she swore never to divulge.

    As soon as the Duke of Chase meets the woman his deceased brother had intended to wed, he is unexpectedly captivated by the lady’s beauty, but he quickly suspects she is hiding a secret, making him more determined than ever to discover the truth behind his brother’s fatal accident.

    Will Leah break her promise and confide in the only man who can keep her safe?

    Review:
    Leah’s fiance died in an accident immediately after revealing he had an illegitimate son. Leah promised that she wouldn't tell his grandmother.  Leah has been paying the greedy mistress to take care of the child even though Leah’s clandestine selling of jewels and trips out of town are providing fodder for the local scandalmonger, Irma Crandle.

    The Duke, Nicolas, returns to the stunning news of his brother’s death. He overhears rumors making him suspicious of Ms. Sheridan’s role in the ‘accident’.  He rushes to meet a beautiful woman stepping out of the ballroom but his attitude becomes hostile as soon as he learns it is the mysterious Ms. Sheridan.

    Leah is summoned to meet with the mistress but arrives to find the sick child has been abandoned. In spite of her promise, Leah decides it is time to take the child to her fiance’s family.  Too bad she follows the poor advise of her best friend, Anne, the Duke’s cousin, who encourages Leah to wait a few days before revealing the truth.

    Nicolas follows Leah while another cheeky fellow, Trinity, is spying on her for Ms. Crandle. The Duke continually jumps to negative conclusions and struggles with his strong attraction to Leah.

    This story is driven by the characters as they weave their way through rumors, half truths and misconceptions. Leah is a likeable character as a lovely, kind young woman with an air of sadness due to her lose of love and twisted rumors. She longs for love and a home but sees Nicolas as a man who likes his life: “Uncluttered. Unemotional. Unattached.” Nicolas is arrogant and impulsive in his judgments, but he has undeniable loyalty and tenderness with his family. The eccentric gossip hound and the roguish Trinity are two quirky characters who add humor to the story.  Nicolas’ grandmother and Leah’s sister, Kat, are also likeable characters with some meddling tendencies. There is a bit of intrigue with the mistress’s conniving and the threats of gossip that could ruin Leah’s reputation.

    Ms. Julian writes an engaging story with a nice, easy flow. The romance is sweet but there is strong conflict and sensual tension that keeps the story interesting. I also enjoyed Ms. Julian’s first novel, The MacGregor’s Daughter (see my review here). I recommend both stories to those who enjoy historical romance with sweet romantic tension and a quick pace.
    ~~~~~~~
    Anne helps Leah admit her feelings for Nicolas:
    "Does your heart beat faster whenever Nicolas is near?"
    "Yes."
    "And when his dart eyes watch you?"
    "I feel as though I'm the only woman in the room."
    "He speaks and...?"
    "His voice creates shivers that slowly dance down my spine until they reach my toes."
    "His touch?"
    "Takes my breath away."
