Sharing Beyond Books #99 Comment Giveaway May 11, 2013

Hi Friends. Welcome to SBB, Sharing Beyond Books.

Happy Saturday night. (I almost put up a post that this would be late as I wasn't feeling well earlier this eve. But now I feel better.)  I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your Spring (or Fall) weather.
Thank you to all who shared last week.

Only one or two of you indicated little music listening like me. The rest have a wide variety of listening pleasures including classical, oldie goldies, country, rock, metal and more!

I was a little surprised that 10 out of 27 of us have not read The Twilight series. I was more surprised that seven of you  have not read JK Rowling - no Harry Potter. Then there were other famous names there that were interesting. I love Mary P's statement, that was echoed by Holly and Emily - "I'd rather read great books rather than books by writers who are 'famous'."
The Winner from SBB #98 comments is: #18 Ingeborg who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the ARC/Review titles, Christmas titles or Love titles - all linked near the end of the post.  Please let me know your choice by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #99 Questions

Q1. Elizabeth asks:  What is your favorite vacation location?? (I thought this was good since many of us may be planning our summer vacations now.)
A: My favorite vacation has to be a cruise and I'm not real picky where as long as it is at least 5 days - but I prefer longer and not just an East Caribbean itinerary. I still think our Viking River Cruise was the Best! I loved the daily tours that were included. But I have really enjoyed our transatlantic cruises and the one in Alaska too.

Q2. My bookish Question this week: I started with the Q What is a book written the year of your birth. Then I realized that would be giving away our ages. So the modified Q is: A] Have you read any book written the year of your birth - share if you like. or B] Name an author you HAVE read that wrote in the decade surrounding your birth.
A: I choose to answer B]. Three authors wrote trilogies during the decade of my birth that I have read: Issac Asimov - The Foundation Series; C.S. Lewis - The Chronicles of Narnia; and J.R.R. Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We can always use fresh questions. I do have a group of questions from the same submitters so if you have a question don't be afraid to ask!

Your turn to share:

  1. 1. My favorite places to travel to are both the US and the UK ... this fall I'll be going to both Scotland and London for two weeks which I'm really excited about!

    2. I read "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum" by Heinrich Böll which was published the year I was born (that one was for school so I did not exactly read it voluntarily). On a lighter and more entertaining if somewhat creepier note - I also read "Carrie" by Stephen King!

  2. Congrats to the winner.
    1. One of my favorite places to vacation is down the shore. There's nothing more soothing to me then to read on the beach and hear the waves lapping upon the beach.

    2. I have read Goodnight Moon, The Diary Of Ann Frank and A Tree Grows In Brooklyn.

  3. 1. since we're heading out soon for cruise #18, I'd also pick a cruise. My bucket cruises are Europe, Alaska and Tahiti and the South Pacific.
    2. I don't think I've read anything from my birth year

  4. 1. I enjoy vacationing in the Caribbean for the beach and warm weather, as well as Europe for the culture, art, and ancient ruins. :)

    2. I had to look this up the time frame on Goodreads...I've read books by Toni Morrison, Stephen King, John Grisham, etc.

  5. 1. I prefer staycations nowadays. Travelling can be quite tiring & I always feel like I need a another vacation to recover! Also the things I like to do most (read) I much prefer to do in the comfort of my own home.
    2. I haven't a clue! Most of the books are written by authors in our current day n age.

  6. I have read those trilogies too. Awesome stuff.

My favorite vacations have been with my man, where we set a loose itinerary (what states should we see?) and drive to national or state parks where we do a little hiking. Oh, and there is usually lots of good food.

I was born 1978 and here are some books published that year that I have read: Another Fine Myth by Robert Asprin (such a silly series!), Beauty by Robin McKinley (confusing for my teen self), Witch World by Andre Norton (loved her stuff as a kid and teen).

  7. 1. I love the mountains. Last year, my husband and I went to New Hampshire and loved it, especially since Vermont and Maine were so close, too.
    2. I am sure I have read books written in my birth year, but I have no clue which ones. I did love the teen romances from the 80s.

  8. never read a book written in my birth year

  10. 1. My favorite vacation spot seems to be Las Vegas. It's about the only place I go other than down to San Diego and that's just a day trip.

    2. There are some wonderful authors who were writing at the time of my birth... C.S. Lewis, Albert Camus, JRR Tolkien, Henry Miller, Robert Heinlein. The one written the year of my birth that I did read was George Orwell's 1984.

  11. I love a relaxing beach vacation - as long as there is plenty of shade to sit in!

I googled for books published in my YOB & got a nice list off Goodreads- haven't read any of them, but several have been made into very good movies I've seen

  12. 1. I love to take a vacation up on the Sunshine Coast QLD. The beaches are pristine & bonus, I have family up there to catch up with & stay with.

    2. I had to Google this. There are quite a few I have read from the year of my birth & I must say quite an eclectic mix. I've added 5 here, but it seems it was a busy year for writing.

    HAWAII by James A. Michener
CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS by Agatha Christie
ASTERIX THE GAUL by René Goscinny
TO SIR, WITH LOVE by E.R. Braithwaite
MY BROTHER MICHAEL by Mary Stewart

  13. I Follow via Networked Blogs: Meghan Stith
1.) Well, I've been to many, many places but would love to go back to either Stockholm, Sweden or Cancun, Mexico. I know that Stockholm is cold but it's a beautiful country with beautiful people and a lot of history. Cancun is warm and sunny and has some great food!
2.) A. I'm not sure, to be honest. I don't usually pay attention to particular years books have been written.
    B. I know I've read a few that were written in the '80s (when I was born.) One I can think of off the top of my head is MacKenzie's Mountain by Laura Howard. I loved that book and it was written in 1989.
    Thanks for the giveaway!!

  14. 1) a relaxing place... i immediately think about where i went as a child but it changed so much that's not the same so i will say a place with a swimming pole, few people and good food and i'm happy i don't have a specific place for holidays since i nearly don't go ( not in teh last 3years if no more already)

    2) To be honest i don't know....i don't look at teh published date of a book except when i have to review it since it's a info i include

  15. One of my favourites vacations was in BC, and I am actually moving there at the end of the month. I'm quite excited, although it's a bit scary as it's on the other side of the country from where I am currently.

My favourite series, Incarnations of Immortality by Piers Anthony, was written during my birth decade.

  16. Q1. Hong Kong for now. I love the food and shopping and cleanliness!

Q2. Gosh I am sad to say I have not read any of the authors' book from my birth decade. I have however, watched lots of the adaptations. Like Robert Ludlum, Roald Dahl, Margaret Atwood, and Amy Tan etc.
